Students, faculty and staff gathered Thursday in the USU Grand Salon for a CSU-wide Juneteenth symposium, "Pathways to Progress: Legacy, Learning and Leadership," hosted at Cal State Los Angeles and livestreamed statewide. During the event, President Erika D. Beck honored former CSUN President Blenda Wilson, who died earlier this month at the age of 85. Wilson, CSUN's third president, was the first African American woman to lead a large American university and oversaw the university's recovery after the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

The Black National Anthem was performed by the choir of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Pasadena. The program featured remarks from CSU Chancellor Mildred Garcia and Cal State Los Angeles President Berenecea Johnson Eanes, a keynote address by National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial, and a panel discussion on mentorship and African American representation. Garcia described Juneteenth as both a celebration of progress and a reflection on the nation's painful history.

Stay tuned for the full story.
