Today, we recognize the American flag and the values and responsibilities it represents.
Through our exchange programs, international visitors often experience Flag Day traditions and civic life in ways that leave a lasting impression, from conversations with local residents to community ceremonies and moments that reflect service, volunteerism, and participation in American life.
One of our most memorable experiences in recent years included international exchange participants attending a local Flag Retirement Ceremony led by Scouts and veterans, offering a meaningful look at how communities honor national symbols with respect and care.
Thank you to all who help share the traditions, stories, and everyday experiences that make Northwest Florida a welcoming place to learn and connect.

Pensacola’s history stretches back centuries and includes a chapter many Americans are surprised to discover.
As we approach Freedom 250, we are proud to share local places that help visitors experience American history where it happened. This photo features Bernardo de Gálvez, the Spanish military leader whose victory during the Siege of Pensacola in 1781 helped secure the Gulf Coast and weaken British control during the American Revolution. The campaign became the longest major siege of the Revolutionary War and contributed to the broader effort that led to American independence.
In recognition of his support of the American cause, General Gálvez was later named one of only eight Honorary Citizens of the United States.
This year, we invite you to celebrate Freedom 250 with us by helping international exchange participants experience these stories firsthand. Join us for a future Exchange Café or consider welcoming them to a Fourth of July celebration and share what freedom, community, and civic life look like in Northwest Florida today.
