This week in Chapel, our students are traveling out of Genesis and entering the second book of the Bible, Exodus. They learn about how Moses was spared the worst fate by God to be used for a much greater purpose.

This story from the Bible comes from Exodus 2:1-10 and tells of how many years later in Egypt, the number of Hebrews grew exponentially, instilling fear in the new Pharaoh that the Hebrew people would overwhelm the Egyptians so he sent out his soldiers to take every newborn in the section where the Hebrews lived in Egypt. Eliminating an entire generation of Hebrews.

But God spared Moses by giving his mother the wisdom to hide him and send him down the Nile to keep him safe. And in doing so, set Moses on the path to become Israel’s deliverer.

Moses was raised in Pharaoh’s palace as the son of the princess. Raised without knowing he was in fact a Hebrew.

As Moses grew into an adult, he realized and learned that he was a Hebrew, and that his very people had been enslaved by the very people who had promised his ancestors protection and a home.

This week in Chapel, our students are learning about how Joseph helps his family even after what they did to him all those years ago.

This Bible story takes place in two chapters of the book of Genesis. Genesis 45:1-15 and Genesis 50:15-21.

It details how Joseph's family, his brothers, came to Egypt during the seven years of famine that Joseph had described by interpreting the Pharoah's dream. Because of that, Egypt was able to preserve much grain and other necessities during the seven years of abundance prior to the famine taking place.

Many people from neighboring countries and providences and tribes came to Egypt daily for grain and other supplies during these seven years. One of those families being Joseph's own brothers looking for food for their families. But when they approached the throne room, they did not recognize their brother and bowed to him in reverence.

And despite all that they had put him through, he not only forgave them, but he helped them and moved all of their families to Egypt so that they would be cared for and protected.

This week in Chapel, our students are learning about Pharoah's Dreams and how Joseph interpreted them to save Egypt!

This story from the Bible comes from Genesis 39:20 - 41:57

Joseph had been sold to one of Pharoah's officials by the name of Potiphar, working amongst the household staff as a slave for several years. The Lord never parted from Joseph though. So much so, that eventually, Potiphar put Joseph as the head of the household, entrusting everything Potipher holds dear into Joseph's control because he grew to trust him so much.

Potiphar's wife however coveted Joseph and when she was denied, she had her husband send Joseph to prison for a crime he did not commit!

But even while in prison, God granted Joseph His favor and the warden of the prison saw Joseph's potential, granting him charge of all those who were being held in the prison.

Joseph had encountered two men in the prison in particular who both had been having odd dreams. Joseph, who was granted favor by God, interpreted the dreams of both men. The Cupbearer would return to his service to the Pharoah while the Baker would not return to his job and remain in prison.

Word reached Pharoah years later from the very same Cupbearer of Joseph having the gift of interpreting dreams. He summoned Joseph and began to recount his dreams for the Hebrew to interpret.

"In my dream i was standing on the bank of the Nile, when out of the river came up seven cows, fat and sleek, they grazed among the reeds. After them, seven other cows came up-- scrawny and very ugly and lean. I had never seen such ugly cows in all the land of Egypt. The lean, ugly cows ate up the seven fat cows that came up first. But even after they ate them, no one could tell that they had done so; they looked just as ugly as before. Then i woke up." Gen 41:17-23

Joseph interpreted the dreams to Pharoah detailing how the seven healthy cows signified great abundance and riches for seven years in Egypt, and the seven weak cows meant that there would be seven years of famine after the seven years of abundance.

This week in Chapel, our students are learning about Joseph and his brothers!

Joseph was beloved by their father Jacob more than his brothers because Joseph was born to him from his wife Rachel. He created Joseph a coat of many colors which arose jealousy and anger in his elder brothers.

One night. Joseph had a dream about tied stems of grain all circled around one grain stem in particular and began to bow. He went to tell his brothers about the dream and when he did, they mocked him.

The following night he had another dream, this time the sun, moon and stars bowed to him. When he told his brothers about this second dream, they did not believe him. Not even his father believed him when he told him.

During that night, the brothers came up with a plan to get rid of Joseph, their anger driving them to extreme lengths. They lured Joseph out into a field where a pit was and tore off his coat of many colors, pushing him into the pit. When the traders arrived, the brothers sold Joseph to them.

Joseph was heading to Egypt.

This week in Chapel, our students are learning about Jacob wrestling with an Angel of God!

This Bible Story comes from the book of Genesis 32:22-31 and details how Jacob wrestled against one of God's angels and what took place during that night.

Jacob during this time in the Bible, has fled from his father's tribe in fear of retribution from his elder brother Esau for stealing his firstborn birthright. He now has a family, servants and a tribe of his own.

He is alone during this one particular night and encounters a man he does not recognize. The two begin to wrestle and during the struggle, the angel notices he cannot overpower Jacob so he dislocates Jacob's hip to end the struggle between the two.

Then the man said, "Let me go, for it is daybreak." but Jacob refused, saying, "I will not let you go until you bless me." The man asked him, "What is your name?"
"Jacob." he answered. Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome." Genesis 32:26-28

Jacob showed that some blessings come after a struggle, persevering through difficulties for a better outcome in the future.
