The most important work in the accounting profession is often the work you never see.
Most CPAs don’t spend their time reading regulatory exposure drafts or tracking proposed changes to professional standards.
They’re serving clients, running firms, and solving complex problems.
But behind the scenes, dozens of proposals each year could change how those professionals operate, from independence rules to peer review oversight.
PICPA’s professional standards team monitors proposals from groups like the AICPA and NASBA, evaluates how they might affect practicing CPAs, and advocates for practical, high-quality regulation.
Recently, that advocacy helped improve a proposal affecting peer review oversight for firms with complex ownership structures. The revised version now includes clearer evaluation criteria and a sunset provision, important safeguards that were not in the original proposal.
It’s a good reminder that the health of the profession depends not just on the work CPAs do every day, but also on the policies that govern that work.
And sometimes the most important wins are the policies that never become problems.

The PICPA's Allison Henry is making our voice heard on a critical issue for the profession.
In a new Bloomberg Tax commentary, Allison examines the PCAOB's proposed amendments to QC 1000 and why they represent a practical, meaningful step toward reducing compliance burdens without compromising audit quality.
Several of the proposed changes align directly with recommendations the PICPA and other stakeholders have advocated for, including eliminating the design-only requirement for inactive firms and removing the external quality control function requirement.
Strong audit quality and a healthy audit marketplace aren't competing goals. Read Allison's full analysis at the link below.
