Here’s the next installment in my new series of video tips for musicians on how to play without pain 🎶

Last time we looked at how we use our attention and began to cultivate a more inclusive attention by including peripheral information instead of excluding it.

Today we add in kinesthetic and tactile information to what Cathy Madden calls our “sensory soup"

We begin by noticing our feet on the floor - our literal “grounding”. If you’re seated notice the surfaces of your sit-bones and back of your thighs on the chair. 🪑

Next allow yourself to feel the weight of your arms and the space between your arms and the sides of your ribs. Can you notice the spaciousness of your armpits?

Now do some experimenting:

What happens if you look at your score or instrument? Does the sensation of your feet, seat and arms diminish and fade?

Re-orient yourself to the sensation of your feet, seat and arms and repeat the experiment as you invite yourself to continue to have a lively sense of yourself as you look at your music or your instrument or even the case that stores your instrument.

How did the experiment feel to you? If it felt unfamiliar you have succeeded in exploring un-habituated territory - bravo!! 👏👏👏👏

Share your findings below 👇🏽and let me know what pain you are having in your music-making so I can be of help 🙏

“You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.” - Jon Kabat-Zinn

Life keeps comin’…. Ups and downs are all a part of it.

This year has had a plethora of “bumps in the road” for me personally, and my favorite response to being asked “how are you?” is to make a wave-like motion with my hand 🌊
as I say “I’m riding the waves” 😎

Alexander’s discoveries provide a tool kit for us to navigate those waves - teaching us that we have a choice in how we respond 🙌🏼

If you are a pianist or piano teacher - this is for you! I had the great pleasure of presenting my online workshop “Rethinking Hand Position” in February hosted by the wonderfully talented Lynda Saponara of Piano Teacher.

If you are a piano teacher - hand position is a THING 😉 and it comes up A LOT! 🤣

As an AT teacher, I’ve worked with scores of pianists over the years.

The perspective I share is to show pianists that what they are doing with their WHOLE selves is directly impacting what happens (or doesn’t happen) in their hands.

In other words - trying to fix your (or your students’) hand position solely from your hands will always fall short…

Curious to learn more? The replay of the workshop is now available on the AT Phila website 🤸🏿♀️

“You can do it like it’s a great weight on you, or you can do it like it’s a part of the dance.” - Ram Dass

Alexander’s discoveries help us transform harmful habits into useful energy - What kind of dance will you craft today?

Welcome to my new series of video tips for musicians on how to play without pain 🎶

If you are a musician playing in pain, not only is that pain robbing you from enjoying playing - it is also preventing you from playing your best music 💔

The first key 🗝️to unlocking harmful habits that keep you locked in pain is all about your attention - a narrowed attention adds muscular tension and let’s be real - we’ve been taught to “concentrate” and block peripheral information - but what if equating “concentration” with good focus is a myth and your habits of concentration are actually diminishing your focus?

Do you squeeze yourself and make yourself smaller when you look at your score?

If you study music that way, learn it that way and memorize it that way - you will play it that way! 😝

Join me in this experiment: Place one hand on your score and then let your eyes wander around the space you’re in - allowing your eyes to lead your head and whole body following - taking in the space visually as you see the score peripherally.

Now let your eyes take in the details of the score and move your hands all around the score - above, below, behind and to the sides, and allow yourself to take in that visual information peripherally as you still focus on the details of the score.

How did the experiment feel to you?
If it felt unfamiliar you have succeeded in exploring un-habituated territory - bravo!! 👏👏👏👏

“All mistakes teach us something, so there are, in reality, no mistakes.” - Nikki Giovanni

Or as Miles Davis famously said “There are no mistakes - it’s what you play next.” This sums up a HUGE shift in my thinking and development as an AT teacher and human.

Being fearful to make a mistake is crippling and stunts growth. Period.

When we realize “mistakes” are merely information we turn straw into gold - true alchemy!!

What mistakes have you learned from?
Some may be big, and other quite small - yet all are gems.

I’ve been lucky to have numerous, hugely impactful, generous mentors in my lifetime.

Here I am with Douglas Dunn, dancer, choreographer, teacher and friend to me since I studied with him at Harvard Summer Dance in 1981 - it’s kinda wild to follow someone’s work for 45 years!

Studying with Douglas was a huge, pivotal moment in my development as a choreographer - His work has been provoking and delighting me for 45 years.

To see him and his lovely wife Grazia still dancing on stage with grace and honesty moved me to tears - Thank you for doing what you do ❤️👍
