SMCC Student Becomes First Graduate to Receive the Certificate of Completion in Applied English Language Skills | South Mountain Community College 06/15/2026

Congratulations to South Mountain Community College’s recent graduate, Maricarmen Guzman-Rojas, who became the first student at the college to graduate with the newly created Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Applied English Language Skills this past May.

SMCC adopted this program in the fall of 2024, which was designed to provide English language learners with advanced skills for professional and academic purposes.

As a community health worker with a strong interest in behavioral science, Maricarmen is using the skills she learned in her courses at SMCC to further succeed in her career and help make a difference in her community.

Become a Cougar: Open tryouts for the Nation's Number 2 community college baseball team this Friday, June 12 beginning at 8 a.m. at the SMCC Baseball Field!

Open to any and all 2025 and 2026 high school graduates, anyone interested in participating in the tryouts must RSVP to SMCC assistant coach Kevin Soine at [email protected]

Participants must bring their own equipment and a copy of a valid sports physical within the last 13 months.

There is a $20 tryout fee.

Register now for two new CIS courses for the fall 2026 semester!

- CIS137: Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals
- CIS144: Applied Artificial Intelligence

Students who enroll in these courses should expect to learn foundational AI concepts, practical applications of AI tools, prompt engineering, ethical concerns, bias in AI systems and how AI is already influencing careers and industries.

Some last thoughts from Graduation season!

• SMCC had 570 students who collectively earned 1,036 degrees and certificates of completion, which included 133 bachelor’s degrees awarded.

• It was the biggest graduating class yet, as well as the largest cohort from the SMCC bachelor's degree program in Behavioral Sciences!

• Nearly 300 students participated in the ceremony, where they were recognized by SMCC President Dr. Veronica Hipolito in the conferring of the degrees, with MCCCD Board member Tom Nerini.

• Two students were acknowledged as this year’s valedictorians by SMCC Vice President of Student Affairs Kristina Scott, Ed.D. for exemplifying academic excellence: Camryn Cox was selected as valedictorian for the bachelor’s degree program and Lirio Delgado Diaz was selected as valedictorian for the associate degree program!
