At Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children, we are continually inspired by the dedication, strength, and love our families show every day.

Today, we're proud to celebrate one of our student families as Simon and his father, Mike Medved, are featured in ItsDadDay's newest documentary series, *Go West*. The episode shares Mike's journey as a father, educator, musician, and advocate, including his incredible experience pushing Simon through the Pittsburgh Marathon.

While this story highlights one remarkable father, it also reminds us of the countless parents and caregivers in our WPSBC community who show up every day with unwavering commitment, determination, and love. Your advocacy, support, and belief in your children help make every milestone possible.

Summer is in full effect! The team here at WPSBC hopes everyone is having a blast during their summer break. Stay cool and soak up the sunshine!

STEAM camps for students with blindness and visual impairments are rare, yet incredibly important. This camp provides students with disabilities with the same opportunity to explore and develop skills in STEAM fields as their sighted peers. It's a way to bridge the educational gap and ensure all students have access to the knowledge and experiences that are increasingly important in today’s world.

This camp bridges the gap between inclusion and isolation for students who are blind or visually impaired that are educated in their neighborhood school. Camp presents an opportunity to bring children who are blind or visually impaired together and build a community of peers with similar learning needs!

Who: Students entering grades 3-9 with blindness or visual impairments*
When: August 3-7, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Congratulations to this year’s graduates on reaching an important milestone. Graduation represents hard work, persistence, and achievement, and we are excited to see what the future holds for the next generation. Everyone here at WPSBC is so proud of each of these students.

2026 Preschool Promotion was today, and the team at WPSBC is so proud! This is an incredible milestone that was celebrated with friends and family. Congratulations to each of our students!

Isaiah has been selected as the May Employee of the Month at Paw Prints! Isaiah has been selected because of his excellent work ethic and dedication to his work readiness tasks. Isaiah especially enjoys completing errands and deliveries for the Paw Prints store as it gives him extra practice with self-propelling his wheelchair throughout the School environment. Isaiah has made progress in skills outlined in his IEP such as packaging items in a sequence, propelling his wheelchair, and appropriately asking for assistance when needed. Congratulations, Isaiah, keep up the great work!

At WPSBC, Say Something Nice Day is a reminder that our school community is built not just on academics, but on respect, encouragement, and everyday kindness. A simple compliment in the hallway, a supportive word before a task, or a thank you to a teacher can help create a more positive environment for everyone! 2026 Field Day was a success! Lots of outdoor games to get us ready for the summertime! Every student had a blast playing outside with their friends.

Gigi has been selected as the April Employee of the Month at Paw Prints! Gigi has been selected because of her positive attitude and dedication to her vocational tasks. Whether she is working as a cashier assistant, to fill expendable orders, or to stock inventory, Gigi is certain to complete her work with a cheerful, thorough attitude. Gigi has made progress in skills outlined in her IEP such as visually scanning from an array to locate appropriate materials for tasks, selecting on-task discussion topics using her voice output device, and independently pushing/steering her wheelchair to and from her job shifts. Congratulations, Gigi, keep up the great work!

Beep Baseball is here!
This inclusive activity is filled with fun, and designed to make baseball accessible to every one of our students. Each student has the opportunity to engage with the game, score points, and experience the excitement of being on the field. The focus is on movement, listening skills, confidence, and having fun in a supportive environment where everyone can succeed. It’s always an amazing day filled with smiles, cheers, and a strong sense of belonging for our entire school community!
