Starting July 1, Dean McLain will lead BYU Engineering as Michael Jensen concludes his time as dean after 10 years of dedicated leadership and service.

🔧 He enjoys fixing and repairing things and has never needed to call a repair technician to his house.

Meet Jesse Barnum!

“As a member of BYU’s Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC) Team, I have gained experience with applying technical security hardening skills on a variety of operating systems as well as the ability to work under high pressure with extreme constraints.

My path to CCDC required me to push past what I thought I was capable of and adapt to new challenges and circumstances...I’ve learned to utilize networking tools, SIEM tools, and write Bash and PowerShell scripts to automate essential functionality within the competitions. I have learned extensively from my teammates whose own expertise in threat hunting, networking, and web applications have sharpened my understanding.

After coming in 1st place in our region’s recent qualifying competition, we will soon be competing in a Regional competition in Denver to advance to Nationals in April.

BYU and the College of Engineering have truly allowed me to learn in ways which would not be otherwise possible. I am continuously grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow as a student and as a professional.

I encourage all other students to not set limits on their own abilities and seek to do challenging things. Opportunities for growth surround us; we simply need to recognize our potential and take advantage of such experiences.”

What if you could build your own bike from scratch, then ride it across Europe? 🚲

BYU’s Build and Ride a Bike in Europe study abroad does exactly that. Students build their own custom bikes in England, bike the coast of France into Spain, visit sites like CERN, Brompton Bikes, and the Cadbury Chocolate Factory, and even design their own surfboard along the way.

And it’s all starting this Friday! Stay tuned for posts and a Takeover Tuesday as students ride across Europe on bikes they built with their own hands!

Lauren Alley, another student who was able to attend the study abroad in the Netherlands, shares her experiences and photos from the trip!

“This study abroad was such a cool opportunity!! Not only did we get to see some of the best water engineering in the world, but we also got to see our capstone project in person. It was so fun to get to see how our project looked in the real world, not just in ArcGIS.

It was also really cool to see how many people are protected as a result of the d**e relocation in the area. It put into perspective why civil engineering is so important, and how big of an impact we make in our communities!

11/10 would recommend doing a study abroad if you can, it was one of the coolest experiences of my life!”

“On our capstone study abroad, we spent over two weeks in the Netherlands visiting numerous significant water engineering sites, including the capstone project locations for each team on the trip. It was an incredible experience that allowed us to learn so much while seeing the places we had researched come to life.

Some of the highlights included Kinderdijk, the Overdiepse Polder (my team’s capstone site), the Maeslantkering Barrier, the Oosterschelde Barrier, the Cruquius Pumping Station, and the Temple. It was fascinating to see how the Dutch have effectively and sustainably managed water over the years, and the trip gave all of us valuable insights for our future work in the engineering industry.

I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity and for the experiences and knowledge we gained throughout the trip.”

As a young faculty member, Dr. Steve Shumway wanted to bless his peers in the Technology and Engineering Studies profession. Having done just that for over 30 years, he was recognized at the recent 2026 ITEEA Conference with two awards: the Wilkinson Meritorious Service Award and the Technology and Engineering Teacher of the Year Award.

We are proud of Dr. Shumway and his leadership in excellence and welcoming character that make him so deserving of these honors.
