160 years after the first Juneteenth, the legacy of freedom lives on through every opportunity we have today. The ability to pursue an education, build a career, lead in our communities, express ourselves authentically, and dream about the future are opportunities made possible by generations of courage, resilience, and sacrifice.

💬 This Juneteenth, we invite you to reflect on a simple but powerful prompt: “Because of those who came before me, I am able to...”

For Kelsey Oliveira, Director of the LGBTQ+ Center, the most meaningful part of her work is creating spaces where students feel seen, valued, and empowered to be their authentic selves.

Every day, Kelsey works to foster a community where belonging is more than a word, it is something every student can experience. Through resources, education, advocacy, and community-building, she is dedicated to ensuring LGBTQ+ students know they are supported and celebrated.

That sense of belonging is perhaps most visible during Lavender Graduation, an annual celebration honoring LGBTQ+ graduates as they prepare for their next chapter. Watching students cross the stage and embrace the next phase of their lives is a reminder of the resilience, courage, and authenticity that define so many members of the q***r community.

Much of Kelsey’s outlook is shaped by a phrase her grandmother often shared with her: “No hay mal que por bien no venga” (“There is no bad from which some good doesn’t come”). The words have become a source of strength, reminding her to find hope, joy, and purpose even in difficult moments.

Watching students step confidently into their next chapter serves as a constant reminder of why this work matters and why creating spaces where people feel seen, valued, and supported can have a lasting impact!
