Did you know there is a whole community of programs working to put passionate STEM teachers in the classrooms that need them most?
UNC Pembroke just launched a scholarship program that covers tuition, housing, meals, and more for students who want to become science and math teachers in rural, high-need communities in southeastern NC.
Sound familiar? It should — it's the same spirit that drives NC Teaching Fellows. The UNCP program is specifically designed to place teachers in high-poverty districts like Robeson, Sampson, Scotland, and Columbus counties, cultivating educators who reflect and understand the communities they serve.
If you've ever thought about making a difference in a classroom, this is your sign. Learn about what UNC Pembroke is doing — and explore how NC Teaching Fellows can help you get there too.

Big news for the future of North Carolina classrooms!
The North Carolina Teaching Fellows program is welcoming a record 522 new Fellows for the 2026–27 academic year — the largest incoming cohort since the program was reinstated, with students joining from 77 North Carolina counties and 11 states!
Through forgivable loans of up to $10,000 per year, Teaching Fellows helps make earning a teaching degree more affordable while preparing future educators to serve students across North Carolina. Fellows also gain mentorship, leadership development, classroom experience, and a statewide network of support.
As North Carolina continues working to strengthen the teacher pipeline, these future educators are preparing to make a lasting impact in classrooms and communities across our state.

What a great visit today for our institutional partners and program at Appalachian State University and the Reich College of Education at Appalachian State University!
App State’s North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program was honored to host Campus Directors from our partner institutions, along with members of the NCTF Commission. The visit offered time to reflect on the program’s impact, collaborate on strengthening North Carolina’s educator pipeline, and celebrate the enduring legacy of Teaching Fellows across the state.
A heartfelt thank you to our NCTF partner institutions, Commission members, App State NC Principal Fellows, NC Teacher Support, and alumni for your continued dedication to supporting and preparing the next generation of teacher-leaders.

There’s encouraging news for the future of North Carolina classrooms!
East Carolina University, which enrolls more education students than any university in the state, welcomed 938 new College of Education students in 2025 — a positive sign as North Carolina continues working to strengthen the teacher pipeline.
The North Carolina Teaching Fellows program is making that path more accessible. Through forgivable loans of up to $5,000 per semester, NCTF reduces the cost of earning a teaching degree while preparing students to lead in classrooms across the state.
Beyond financial support, Teaching Fellows gain early classroom experience, mentorship, and a strong community of peers — all designed to prepare confident, career-ready educators for North Carolina schools.
How ECU is recruiting the next generation of teachers:
ECU sees uptick in number of education students as state reports concerns over teacher pipeline
East Carolina University saw an increase in the number of students pursuing teaching degrees last year at a time when an overall decline was seen in educator preparation program enrollment
