What started as a classroom assignment became an award-winning opportunity for seniors in Mrs. Kristi Stott’s AP and Honors Environmental Science classes, proving that creativity can drive real environmental change.
Khloe Moye, Kaitlyn Gronotte, and Ben Borie created a one-minute video focused on protecting and raising awareness for Raleigh’s watershed as part of a project titled “Capture It.” Reece Newman and Lily Burnette created a mixed media art piece called “Choking the Blue.” The Capture It! Arts Contest is a citywide project with the goal of educating people about Raleigh’s water sources.
As part of the contest, students used video and mixed media art to highlight how everyday actions affect local watersheds. From filming along greenways to digging through their own recycling bins, these seniors didn’t just study environmental issues—they experienced them firsthand.
Presented at Raleigh’s Earth Day celebration at Dorothea Dix Park, these projects reached beyond the classroom, educating the community and inspiring conversations about sustainability.
More than awards, this experience sparked lasting awareness. Students walked away with a deeper understanding that small, everyday choices matter and that using your voice (and creativity) can make a difference.

Whitley Andrews is turning her story into encouragement for others.
Earlier this year, NRCA sophomore author Whitley Andrews published her children’s book, “Brave Birdie’s Big Round,” a colorful and encouraging story designed to help young readers face life with courage—especially those navigating type 1 diabetes.
Inspired by her own diagnosis at age 10, Andrews created the character “Birdie,” a young golfer who learns that challenges don’t have to limit her dreams. Through bright illustrations and relatable moments, the book reminds children that perseverance and determination can carry them through even the toughest seasons.
“I wanted to create something I wish I had when I was diagnosed,” Andrews shares. “A reminder that I could still do anything I set my mind to.”
For Andrews, golf was a natural setting for the story. Having played from a young age, she knows firsthand that a diagnosis doesn’t mean stepping away from what you love. Instead, it’s an opportunity to grow stronger through it.
Beyond the course, Andrews also hopes to build understanding. “There are so many misconceptions about type 1 diabetes,” she explains. “I wanted something kids could share with their classmates so others could better understand.”
While writing came easily, bringing Birdie to life required creativity and perseverance of its own. Andrews used digital tools to design each page, refining the illustrations until they felt both engaging and authentic for young readers.
At its heart, “Brave Birdie’s Big Round” carries a message that reaches far beyond one diagnosis: setbacks are not the end of the story.
“To young authors, just go for it,” Andrews encourages. “And to anyone facing a challenge—go after your dreams. Trust God through it all.”
We’re proud to see NRCA students using their gifts to inspire others and point to hope in every circumstance.

TRAIN DAY! Every year, Mr. Parrish's 8th grade history students look forward to Train Day as they explore the impact railroads had on American history and “How the West Was Won.” Students also learn about the history of model trains through a collection featuring tin trains from the 1930s, models from the 1940s-1970s, and even a 1951 steam locomotive that still runs today. The collection also includes modern trains operated by remote control and even a cell phone!
