The Rev. Hershey Mallette Stephens, Dean of the Chapel and Spiritual Life at SAU, shares in our Juneteenth video that June 19, 1865, was a day of jubilation as emancipation finally reached the last enslaved Americans in Texas. This moment of triumph inspired a wave of hope, leading the Episcopal Church to establish mission schools to uplift the newly freed individuals, including Saint Augustine’s Normal School, which was founded in 1867 and is now known as Saint Augustine’s University.

In North Carolina, unsung heroes like Abraham Galloway seized their freedom and forged new paths of Black leadership and self-determination . Their courage and vision helped ensure that freedom would mean more than a moment – it became a movement that empowered generations.

For over 150 years, Saint Augustine’s University has carried that legacy. Today’s existence is a testament to the faith, education, and resilience that grew from Juneteenth’s promise. SAU, the “Miracle on Oakwood,” is still alive – a beacon of hope worth believing in and supporting.

Let’s celebrate Juneteenth – now a national holiday – celebrating freedom and living our ancestors’ dreams. 🐦💙✊🏾
