From Roanoke Rapids to the world stage, these students proved what North Carolina public school students can accomplish when talent, teamwork, and opportunity come together.

Win of the Week ๐Ÿฆพ STEM Class Creates Real-World Solutions for Students

At one school in Buncombe County, STEM education is helping students grasp new opportunities โ€” in more than one sense.

Russell Thompson, a teacher at North Windy Ridge Intermediate School, is using 3D printing technology to design custom prosthetic arms for children with limb differences, helping students gain access to tools that can make everyday tasks easier while opening doors to future possibilities.

"If you're having problems in your life, you don't just walk away from those problems; you find solutions," said Thompson.

What began as a classroom lesson on engineering and the human body grew into a project with real-world impact. After creating prototype prosthetics with students, Thompson developed a functional 3D-printed prosthetic for a fifth-grade student whose excitement and confidence shined the moment she tried it on.

It's a big win for the North Windy Ridge Intermediate School community and for educators like Russell Thompson who are showing how creativity, compassion, and learning can come together to make a difference.

Win of the Week ๐ŸŒŽ Union County student channels compassion into global impact

This week, we're celebrating Cuthbertson High School graduate Cathan Yap, whose commitment to service has grown into a nonprofit organization supporting more than 200 children in Indonesia with food, medical supplies, and other essential resources.

After visiting an orphanage during a trip to Indonesia, Cathan saw a need and chose to act. What began as an idea has become HarYanny, a growing nonprofit that now serves children in multiple cities and is expanding its reach through student leadership chapters.

โ€œDonโ€™t just hope things will happen,โ€ said the graduating senior. โ€œPut in the work to the point where you know they will.โ€

Stories like Cathan's show us how North Carolina public schools help students discover who they are, develop leadership skills, and find ways to make a difference in their communities and beyond.

Shoutout to Cathan for this win and his upcoming graduation!
