Today was a big day and a very early day for Lucas—his first solo flight!

This accomplishment is especially meaningful because Lucas didn't take the easy route to get here. As a full-time truck driver, he fit flight training around an already demanding work schedule. Some days that meant showing up at the airport at 5:00 a.m. before work. Other days it meant flying at 7:00 p.m. after a long day of driving. No matter the time, he showed up ready to learn and improve.

Balancing a career and flight training takes dedication, sacrifice, and a strong commitment to a goal. Lucas proved that if you're willing to put in the work, progress happens one lesson at a time.

Today, all of that hard work paid off as he took to the skies on his own for the very first time. Watching him taxi out and take off solo was a proud moment for his CFI, Greg Rudman.

Yesterday was Ben's day! This hard working, determined young man made us all proud when he earned the title of Commercial Pilot.

What an incredible accomplishment and the result of countless hours of studying, training, perseverance, and dedication. Ben has always set high goals for himself and worked tirelessly to achieve them, and yesterday's milestone is a testament to his commitment and passion for aviation.

We couldn't be prouder of the pilot he has become and the bright future that lies ahead. Congratulations, Ben and extended congrats to his CFI, Courtney Salzman on making sure Ben was ready for his checkride.

Garth decided today was also his day to kick CFI, Andrea Perry out of the plane and take to the skies on his own.

I think his smile says it all! Excitement, relief, exhilaration and generally "wow, I did it" all wrapped into one moment in time captured with this photo. Lots of hard work, dedication, preparation and skill went into this big day.

Garth had the normal student reaction that everyone experiences when the CFI is not beside you for the first time. It's quiet as you are getting ready to take off and upon lift, all of sudden the aircraft is climbing faster. Likewise, it takes a bit longer to settle down for landing.

Huge congratulations Garth! Well done sir!!!

Today was the day that Martin kicked his CFI out of the plane and took to the skies on his own for the first time! Martin took his very first flight with us on April 18th and has been extremely consistent with his training even though his full time Engineering job keeps him busy!

Huge congratulations on this major milestone and kudos to his CFI, Greg Rudman on making sure he was ready for this big day! Now to finish up the requirements to schedule your check ride!

Maverick is now 5 months old and getting taller everyday. He is a perfectionist at napping in the office until about 1p everyday.

Meet Andy Hines, a new instructor with BLFS and our sister company Sierra Flight Training. A little about Andy:

Growing up in the backseat of his dad’s airplane, going to airshows and flying pipeline patrol routes with his dad as a teenager, Andy developed a life-long passion for flying. Although aviation was always a passion, he spent many years working as a General
Contractor before deciding to pursue his dream of becoming a commercial pilot later in life.

Andy was a long time Reno resident before moving to Sacramento to complete his flight training. His background outside of aviation helped shape a patient, hardworking, and approachable teaching style that allows him to connect with students. Andy enjoys helping students build confidence in the airplane while creating a positive and supportive learning environment. There is nothing more rewarding than helping others achieve their certificates, ratings and follow their dreams.

When he’s not flying, Andy enjoys spending time outdoors riding his Sea-Doo's, exploring trails in his RZR, skiing, and taking advantage of any opportunity to be outside with family and friends.

Andy is available for discovery flights, private, instrument, commercial training, BFRs, IPCs, complex and high performance training. If multi-engine training is what your after, Andy can do your multi-engine add-on. Andy has already gotten several students through check rides with a very high first pass rate.

There are few moments in aviation as memorable as a first solo flight.

Today, Andrew joined the ranks of pilots who have experienced the incredible feeling of taking command of an aircraft alone for the very first time. After months of training, preparation, and hard work, his instructor stepped out of the aircraft and watched as confidence, skill, and determination took flight.

A first solo is more than just a milestone—it is a testament to the trust earned, the knowledge gained, and the dedication shown throughout flight training. It's the day a student pilot proves they can safely and confidently operate an aircraft on their own.

We are proud to congratulate Andrew on this achievement and recognize the guidance and mentorship of his flight instructor, Luke Tobiasson whose instruction helped make this day possible.
