VCU College of Health Professions

Two CHP faculty members, Leland (Bert) Waters, Ph.D. and Kristin M. MacDonald, Ph.D., MS, RD, are part of an EPA- and DEQ-funded effort to reduce food waste across the VCU hospital system.

The funding will go towards a scholarship for health administration graduate students, with preference given to those in the Sustainability, Health and Health Care certificate program. In the first year, the team will oversee the students' independent research, while in later years, scholarship recipients will help implement composting and food waste management efforts at the main hospital.

Today, VCU is closed in observance of Juneteenth, a federal holiday and the oldest known commemoration of the end of slavery in the U.S.

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned the Civil War had ended and that they had been declared free nearly two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

This day is a time to reflect on freedom, justice, and hope, and to honor its lasting significance. Local festivals and community events are taking place across the region to recognize Juneteenth.

At VCU, Dr. Carolyn Hawley is helping expose the hidden costs of gambling addiction while building one of the nation’s first comprehensive systems for treatment, recovery and prevention.

CHP recently welcomed Dr. Fofi Constantinidou from the University of Cyprus for a day of research presentations and collaboration focused on brain health, aging and neurorehabilitation.

The visit fostered new opportunities for international partnership and highlighted innovative research taking place across CHP.

VCU Patient Counseling - College of Health Professions recently held its annual Prest Lecture, with Rev. Dr. Anastasia Holman, director of Chaplaincy Education for the Indiana University Health System, as the guest lecturer.

Holman shared insights on bridging tradition and innovation in spiritual care.
