A checklist is one of the most important safety tools a pilot has

Designed to reduce errors, improve consistency, and help ensure every phase of flight is completed safely

Before modifying your checklist, remember these key points:

✅ Start with your aircraft’s POH/RFM/placards, this should always be your foundation

✅ You can customize your checklist—but it should remain accurate, complete, and consistent with the manufacturer’s procedures

🎓 If you teach using a modified checklist, make sure your students understand any differences from the manufacturer’s procedures and can explain why those changes exist

🛠️ Updating your checklist to reflect new avionics, equipment, or aircraft modifications can improve both safety and usability

💡 Bonus Tip: Take your preflight to the next level by creating an Additional Items Checklist that includes things like AD compliance, service bulletins, and aircraft-specific maintenance history
