Florida YMCA Youth In Government

In celebration of the Civic Fellows program, this week’s Throwback Thursday is to the very first Civic Fellows Institute in 2019!

Our partnership with the University of South Florida St. Petersburg was the first of its kind, and allows our Youth in Government students to not only earn college credits for their time in the program, but gain even more hands on civic experience.

Throughout the years we have watched the program grow and adapt, but it has never lost its mission of furthering the civic education of students in Florida.

It has been a busy week already! From the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections, to the Pinellas County Commission, to the City of Seminole local government.

Did you know if you are 16 or 17 years old, you can preregister to vote in Florida?

Our Civic Fellows are getting hands on experience with local government and civic engagement.

The 2026 Civic Fellows Institute has kicked off at The University of South Florida St. Petersburg! This week will be full of civic engagement, leadership development, and lots of fun. At the end of the week, our fellows will walk away with 6 college credits.

As we approach the start of our 70th program year, we wanted to celebrate our history with a series of Throwback Thursdays!

Since our Youth Governor Nina is currently at GovCon in Washington, D.C. we’re throwing it back to GovCon 2012!

Christina Wiley was Youth Governor in 2013 (PY56), originally from West Central Florida.

While fashion trends may have changed, our Youth Governors are still having a great time at GovCon!

Our incoming Youth Governor Nina is in Washington, d.c. at the Youth Governors Conference! She has spent the week with Youth Governors from across the country collaborating, brainstorming, and sharing ideas to bring back to FloridaYIG.

Last night was the Y&G alumni dinner. Not only was Nina able to receive her Youth Governor pin, but she was able to connect with FloridaYIG alumni Tessa (2011-2015), Fahad (2016-2018), Rebecca (2004-2007), & Sophia (2017-2022).

We can’t wait to hear all about her trip to DC!
