Our project will encompass The Slow Foods Garden surrounding a world-class student/community theater that can be so much grander than the sum of its parts.

Adaptive Reuse of the Alfred Giles house built for Solon Stewart in the King William Historic District and siting of the new Black Box Theater behind the house. We have been given the opportunity and responsibility as citizens of the first National Historic District in the state to advocate for pragmatic preservation in ways big and small. Our proposed project heals old wounds of the constant stru

Congratulations to Save the Stein. Fabulous news. Be vigilant. Some school board or municipality may be angling to move or demolish something your town cherishes. Be alert.

Houston's lost landmarks 11/08/2013

You can thank Emily Edwards and founders of the San Antonio Conservation Society for not doing this to our favorite landmarks. We've lost many buildings. There's a really nice photo essay called 'San Antonio Was', documenting many of the incredible pieces of architectural history we did lose.

Houston's lost landmarks In light of voters pushing the Astrodome closer to demolition on Election Day, we took a look at other Houston landmarks and infamous buildings that have been demolished or relocated.

Five Historic Maps Of Manhattan's Morphing Borders 11/01/2013

1836: One of the more interesting maps, this image shows a stark contrast between the north and south. The southern tip is developed and the street grid is starting to creep higher, while the northern end is still very rural. Gizmodo writes, "The city began selling 'water lots' along the shore, where daring entrepreneurs could create their own plots. Sometimes, engineers would sink entire ships to create a solid foundation for landfill".

Pre-Arsenal History: The San Pedro Ditch runs just east of the Commander's House. Opening this lovely military home on all sides would be a more historic interpretation of its relationship to our urban historic core. The arsenal happened in 1859. It's the same debate as Alamo Plaza. At what point do we take a snapshot of history?

As city archaeologist, Hindes scrutinizes excavations 11/01/2013

Kay Hindes, archaeologist extraordinaire. Amazing women protect San Antonio's historical resources. Check out our friend, Kay Hindes' profile. . . .

As city archaeologist, Hindes scrutinizes excavations Scanning a brushy field near known archaeological sites, Kay Hindes noticed the curled-up rattlesnake. Having grown up in a rural community south of San Antonio, she'd encountered plenty of rattlesnakes. [...] she faces developers seeking to, for example, tear down a 150-year-old rock wall or build…

H-E-B street closure request remains illogical, despite $100 million 10/27/2013

"HEB proposes building a fortress. There has to be a better way for HEB to grow".

Thanks Ben Olivo for being a voice tuned in to the needs of historic districts AND businesses. We want them to stay here too. But to grow wisely, towards more industrial areas, with Complete Streets for all citizens. Security is a real concern, but this could be handled in many better, more progressive ways. . .

Mary Carolyn is wonderful. I interviewed her briefly about the Alfred Giles house on Cedar. She told me that Emily Edwards read her palm and told her 'she was bossy....but 'good bossy'. .

Tomorrow night Ted Flato, FAIA, will serve as a panelist for the AIA San Antonio's "A Conversation with Mary Carolyn George". The event, which will give attendees the opportunity to talk with the author of the book on the life and times of O'Neil Ford, is free and open to the public. Historical courtroom restoration underway 08/09/2013

What a marvelous project. Can't wait to see this courtroom restored.

Historical courtroom restoration underway A single grainy photograph of a crowd of men, many in suits holding hats, and minutes from Commissioners Court meetings are among the few precious clues that architects had to help them piece back together the original courtroom in the Bexar County Courthouse and restore it to its 1897 grandeur.
