This month learn and celebrate the plethora of achievements and contributions Black Americans have brought to our country. This year's theme is "Black Health and Wellness" According to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), this theme refers to "the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in western medicine, but also other ways of knowing throughout the African Diaspora.
We start by honoring STEM Heros in this year's theme, Patricia Bath, and Marine Maynard Daly.
Two African American women who have pioneered and overcame the dual hurdles of racial and gender bias in the work field. We thank these women and their accomplishments in the name of science. May their name continue to be remembered throughout American History.
Support Black-owned businesses, Donate to charities working towards equity, and continuously educate yourselves.

It's giving Tuesday tomorrow. Consider making a donation to MAES-Latinos in Science and Engineering. Donations that are made to our group help us to promote STEM, engage in outreach amongst our colleagues and bring in necessary resources. We are asking all former members to consider making a $15 donation because MESA will celebrate 15 years next year. And without MESA there wouldn't be us. Thanks in advance.
To make a donation, log onto the Alamo Give site. Select the MESA Center Program and in the Tribute section put MAES-Latinos in Science and Engineering.

Today kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month! Let's Celebrate!!!
From HispanicHeritageMonth.gov:
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.
