Check out this amazing autobiography written entirely in cursive by one of our 9-year-old MBMA students! โ๏ธ From a love for soccer to adventures with a dog named Ruby, this project showcases beautiful penmanship and personal expression.
At MBMA, cursive is not a lost artโit is a vital part of our curriculum! While many traditional schools have phased it out, Montessori education values cursive because Dr. Maria Montessori recognized it as more natural and developmentally supportive than printing.
Here is why we teach cursive:
Flows Naturally: Continuous, curved motions are easier on developing fine motor skills than the rigid stop-and-start of printing.
Prevents Letter Reversals: Because letters connect, children are less likely to reverse letters like "b" and "d."
Prepared Hands: Years of pouring, spooning, using metal insets, and tracing sandpaper letters build perfect pencil control long before writing begins.
Boosts Reading & Spelling: Connected letters help children see words as complete units, supporting phonics and fluency.
Brain Development: Research shows cursive activates brain areas linked to memory and language differently than typing.
Encourages Neatness & Speed: Once mastered, cursive is faster and more fluid because the pencil stays on the paper.
Values Beauty: Montessori emphasizes purposeful work and an appreciation for elegant self-expression.
In a tech-driven world, handwriting remains an essential tool for cognitive growth. Our students learn cursive joyfully and naturally because the environment prepares them for success step-by-step! ๐
