Ocean Discovery Institute - Young Lives Transformed Through Science

The poor performance of American students in science has been recognized as a national crisis. Department of Education reports that when tested for science knowledge, U.S. high school students ranked in the bottom seven of all countries tested. The current educational structure results in large groups of students who are signif

We're excited to welcome back Nicole Fernandes as our Scientist-in-Residence next week! 🌊✨

Nicole first joined Ocean Discovery as a mentor, helping students see what is possible when someone believes in their potential. Now, she returns to share her experiences in environmental science and continue inspiring the next generation of scientists.

Mentorship has the power to change lives, and Nicole embodies that every time she steps into our classrooms. We are incredibly grateful for her partnership, leadership, and commitment to helping students discover futures they may never have imagined for themselves.

Stay tuned next week as we share stories, conversations, and behind-the-scenes moments from Nicole's visit. You won't want to miss it! 💙

🐢 Happy Sea Turtle Day! 🌊

Today, we're celebrating one of the ocean's most iconic species and the important role they play in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems.

At Ocean Discovery Institute, students learn that protecting our oceans starts with understanding them. Through hands-on science experiences, they explore marine life, investigate local ecosystems, and discover how their actions can help protect species like sea turtles for generations to come.

By inspiring young people to care for the ocean today, we're helping build a future where both people and wildlife can thrive.

🐢 ¡Feliz Día de las Tortugas Marinas! 🌊

📈 This just in: Scientists at UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography reported that carbon dioxide levels at Mauna Loa Observatory reached 432.00 parts per million (ppm), an increase of 1.8 ppm over May 2025’s measurement of 430.2 ppm.

"Atmospheric CO₂ has continued its relentless rise over the past year, reaching yet another record high and moving us deeper into a high-CO₂ world,” said Ralph Keeling, director of the Scripps CO2 Program. “I wish we had better news."

Scientists with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Global Monitoring Laboratory reported an average of 432.3 ppm, an increase of 1.8 ppm over last year.

For more than 65 years, measurements from Mauna Loa have provided one of the clearest indicators of how human activities are changing Earth’s atmosphere. The resulting record, known as the Keeling Curve, remains one of the most important datasets for understanding climate change.
