The African American Achievement and Leadership Initiative (AAALI) was established in 2013 by Superintendent Richard Carranza to provide recommendations to interrupt the inequitable pattern of outcomes for African American students in SFUSD. Before there is a graduate, a leader, a lawyer, a doctor, an engineer, or even another teacher, there is an educator. An educator who sees potential before the world does. An educator who nurtures brilliance, affirms identity, and helps shape futures filled with possibility.

There are a lot of ways educators could spend their summers, but teachers across the district are choosing all gas, no brakes. They are choosing our scholars.

Yesterday was the first day of our AAALI Summer Learning Lab. More than 40 educators were on site to welcome scholars and launch five weeks of literacy, STEM exploration, identity development, and joyful learning. It was a beautiful sight to see.

I’ll celebrate our scholars in a future post, but today I want to recognize the brilliance, commitment, and excellence of our educators.

To every educator who chose to spend part of your summer investing in our children, thank you. 🙏🏾

We are so incredibly proud of each and everyone of our scholars! It is our honor to serve them.

A group of our Black Star Rising (BSR) scholars just departed for a Southern California college tour! Last month, BSR scholars also participated in an HBCU tour with 100% College Prep—exploring campuses, building community, and envisioning their futures.

With the support of dedicated educators and powerful family partnerships, our scholars are building skills and confidence every week. Through Black Star Rising, more students each year are gaining access to dual enrollment, Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus learning labs, credit recovery, mentorship, and meaningful connections to STEM pathways.

When we invest in our students with high expectations, rigorous and relevant learning, and a whole lot of love, they rise—every single time.
