Happy Flag Day School of the Epiphany community and beyond! πΊπΈ Today, June 14th, we celebrate the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official symbol of the United States back in 1777.
To help celebrate, here are five fun facts...
1. Flag Day is celebrated on June 14th because it marks the exact day in 1777 when the Second Continental Congress officially adopted the Stars and Stripes as the national flag.
2. The push for a national Flag Day began in 1885 with a 19-year-old Wisconsin schoolteacher named Bernard Cigrand. He placed a small 10-inch flag in a bottle on his desk and had his students write essays about what the flag meant to them.
3. While individual states celebrated it earlier, Flag Day wasn't established nationally until President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation in 1916. It wasn't officially signed into law as a permanent national observance until President Harry S. Truman signed an Act of Congress in 1949.
4. Even though Flag Day is celebrated across the entire country, Pennsylvania is the only U.S. state that recognizes it as a legal, paid state holiday.
5. In 1958, 17-year-old Robert G. Heft designed the current 50-star flag as a history class project when Alaska and Hawaii were nearing statehood. His teacher, John Gable, gave him a B-minus because it lacked originality. However, Gable promised that if Congress accepted the design, he would raise the grade. Heft sent his flag to his congressman, it was ultimately chosen by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Heft got his grade bumped to an A.
