Calling all families, educators and community members! BCDI-San Francisco is hosting the Black Family Empowerment Day Wellness Summit on Saturday, Jun 27 at 10am. Join us for a day of fun as you immerse yourself in workshops and presentations on wellness, healthy eating, leadership development, powerbuilding, empowerment through education and cultural affirmation.
Our program will highlight NBCDI's Eight Essential Outcomes, including ensuring Black children attend a school that affirms and expands them and have books and toys that reflect who they are and can be.
🧸 We will have a family-friendly, African-themed "Kids Zone" where we will take children of all ages an imaginary trip through various countries abroad.
The event is free and open to all (regardless of cultural background) who have a vested interest in supporting, uplifting and affirming Black children. Funding for this projected provided by the San Francisco Department of Early Childhood. The event's sponsors are Children’s Council of San Francisco, the San Francisco 49ers and Gallagher.

Children’s Council recently honored past leaders, child care champions and dedicated staff who have shaped our organization over the last 50 plus years by unveiling our Children’s Council Leadership Recognition Wall. This wall celebrates past CEOs, Board Chairs, child care providers and community champions and our exemplary staff.
It serves as a reminder of the people whose passion created this movement and continue to uplift San Francisco children, families and early care educators. We honor each individual whose vision, leadership and commitment helped to build the strong foundation that continues to advance our mission and impact today.
To the leaders on this wall: your legacy inspires us every day as we continue to build a future where every child can thrive.

Children’s Council of San Francisco is proud to announce that Denise Ma**ca has been appointed as Chief Philanthropy Officer effective July 1, 2026.
In this newly created role, Ma**ca will lead the development and ex*****on of a comprehensive, multi‑channel fundraising strategy to expand philanthropic revenue from individual, corporate, foundation and government sources.
Previously, Denise led the strategy and ex*****on of fundraising initiatives that advanced Bay Area Discovery Museum’s mission and has been rooted in San Francisco, with prior fundraising leadership roles at Founder's Pledge, SFMOMA and the San Francisco Symphony.
“As a San Francisco parent, I see every day how much families here rely on quality early care to thrive. Children's Council has been a cornerstone of that support for over 50 years, and I'm honored to join an organization whose mission is woven into the fabric of this city. I look forward to partnering with our donors, community members and civic leaders to ensure every San Francisco family has what they need to give their children the strongest possible start,” said Ma**ca.

Children’s Council's Incubator and Instructional Coaches Team recently attended the Count Play Explore (CPE) Institute in Fresno, joining partners across California to celebrate and strengthen early childhood STEAM learning. CPE is a statewide initiative that supports early educators in building confidence and skills to engage young children in STEAM through hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences.
We were proud to showcase the work of our CPE cohort participants, especially Family Child Care (FCC) and Family, Friend and Neighbor (FFN) educators, who have been bringing STEAM concepts into their programs through hands-on exploration, inquiry and joyful learning. We also had the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning, where we explored creative STEAM experiences, experimented with materials and embraced the power of play and inquiry as learners ourselves.
Beatrice Gibson, Children’s Council’s Lead Instructional Coach, joined a panel discussion to share insights on supporting sustainable STEAM learning in family child care settings. We believe STEAM is important in early childhood because young children are natural explorers and problem-solvers. Through everyday curiosity and hands-on learning, educators help children build creativity, confidence and critical thinking skills.
Thank you to our educators for creating meaningful learning experiences for children and families!

We’re still feeling inspired after Children’s Council’s BizNest Incubator team’s presentation at last month’s California Association for the Education of Young Children (CAAEYC) Conference in Pasadena!
The BizNest Incubator team led a session on “Empowering Family Child Care Providers to Support Children with Disabilities,” sharing key legal guidance, including ADA requirements, inclusive practices and strategies for accessing resources, while emphasizing the importance of building trusting relationships with children and families. Through meaningful, open conversations and real-life scenarios, participants gained practical tools, compassionate insights and fresh perspectives.
We are grateful to be part of a community committed to supporting providers creating inclusive spaces where every child belongs.
