In 1945, alumnus Wesley Johnson brought Juneteenth to San Francisco, helping create a lasting tradition that continues to honor African American freedom, culture and community today. A student leader, entrepreneur and trailblazer in the Fillmore District, Johnson’s legacy reminds us of the power of celebration, resilience and civic leadership.

Our Art students have an exciting project awaiting them this fall and spring! For SFSU’s Ann Chamberlain Artist-in-Residency, Paola de la Calle will collaborate with our students to create “Alternate Atlas,” an exhibition in the Fine Arts Gallery reclaiming maps as spaces of imagination, resistance and memory.
