"We're living in an era where charlatans are using a plagiarism machine to produce content that is 'safe' and derivative... All this while true artists yearn to be seen but don't show their work."
In our recent newsletter, SFCWI founder Alexandra Kostoulas (Alexandra Kostoulas) reflects on the very real creative paralysis that strikes when trying to make art in a world that feels increasingly saturated by the artificial.
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, to sit with a blank page in a diner, or to hesitate before hitting send. But true storytelling is a radical act of human courage. The world needs your raw, authentic voice.

Raised in San Jose by parents who were refugees and grocers, UC Berkeley alumnus Viet Thanh Nguyen spent years teaching and collecting rejections before finding success as a writer. The Sympathizer was turned down 13 times before it found a publisher.
Nguyen puts it plainly, “I’m sure there are a lot of people out there with talent, but if they can’t sit in a room for 20 years and endure rejections they’re never going to become a writer. People with less talent who are more stubborn, who are more willing to sit there and endure and write, they have the potential to become writers.”
His stubbornness paid off. The Sympathizer won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. In 2017 he received a MacArthur Fellowship. The Refugees brought San Jose’s Vietnamese community to national readers.
He’s now a regular presence at Bay Area Book Festival and Bay Area universities, where his work on memory, empire, and refugees resonates deeply with San Francisco’s social and political literary culture.
Every literary giant, especially the successful ones, were told NO many times before the world said Yes. Use rejection as motivation, keep learning, keep growing, and most importantly, keep writing.
Your words matter.

Begun at 13 in hiding, Anne Frank's diary became a deliberate literary work crafted for the world to see. Inside a small annex in Amsterdam, she consciously turned her private pages into a public testament, naming fear and practicing courage one entry at a time.
For writers, this is the reminder we need on the hard days: writing isn’t just output. It’s how we metabolize sorrow and find our footing again. The page can hold what the world can’t.
If you’re writing through grief, anxiety, exhaustion, or the news cycle tonight in San Francisco, Oakland, or Berkeley, let the act itself be the reset. Courage isn’t the absence of sorrow. It’s what returns when you keep writing through it.
What are you shaking off on the page today?

Honoring the life, fierce independence, and unforgettable voice of Marjane Satrapi (1969–2026).
As the visionary author of Persepolis, she taught an entire generation of storytellers what it looks like to write with radical honesty, courage, and unyielding dignity. Her words and her legacy live on in every writer who refuses to compromise their truth. 🤍
