Palisades Preschool is a Reggio-inspired, non-profit school community serving children ages 2.9 to 6

Early in the school year children noticed sap coming out of our beautiful cherry tree. They agreed that it must be honey and knew that bees make honey. To test this theory a teacher invited them to look closely and touch and smell the sap. She also held a jar of honey to compare. This was a lovely embodiment of the complex role of the teacher: we must listen, ask questions, seek to understand, and often provoke or challenge. Yesterday a small group of three-year-old children harvested kale from our edible garden to cook for their classmates. We picked the kale, tore off the leaves, washed it, and sautéed it with olive oil, garlic, and pepper. We finished the dish with some fresh lemon juice squeezed from one of our own lemons grown at school. These experiences offer children time and space to connect with food, to learn techniques and processes, and often, to be invested in what they eat and more open to tasting new things. After going to the garden to harvest a lemon, we cut and sampled the fruits and sliced them thin to place in our dehydrator. The children also studied the structure of the sliced fruit and used glass gems to represent them. In their long-term study of sound, children in our Sunflower DK class have explored the structure of seashells, echoes in different spaces, and how animals and insects hear. They are now learning more about the structure of the human ear and have begun to represent the cochlea using reeds and wire. They have begun to see how the structure of the cochlea resembles the structure of so many seashells that they studied earlier in the year. Selecting yarn, string, fabric, or raffia, attaching it to the weaving needle, and passing it back and forth through the warp all require focus, precision, and collaboration. This practice can be slow and methodical, sometimes frustrating, yet is also playful, joyful, and fun! In the wake of the Palisades fire we decided to replace our large edible garden to be able to continue to enjoy planting, tending, harvesting, and eating safely. Our wonderful parent garden committee generously donated funds to purchase new containers, organic soil, and a variety of herb, fruit, and vegetable starters. Children excitedly filled the container with soil and planted chives, cabbage, and some of the seedlings they have been sprouting indoors like corn, peas, beans, and squash.
