Summer Reading Program for all ages kicks off on Saturday, June 13 and runs through Saturday, August 15. Starting June 13, register at smpl.beanstack.com to log your reading minutes for tickets. Redeem your tickets upon completion of the reading challenge for special prizes including a Nintendo Switch 2 for ages 4 – 18 or a Kobo eReader for ages 18+. Plus join us for events, including our Summer Reading Kickoff Party at the Main Library on Saturday, June 13.

🏫 Today, we bring to a close a school year filled with learning, friendships, games, and many special moments. ☀️ Now summer is here: time to rest, have fun, share with your families and enjoy all the excitement of the World Cup that will be accompanying these holidays. 🎉 May every goal, every match, and every celebration remind you of the importance of teamwork, hard work, and never giving up on your dreams. ⚽

We would also like to extend a very special congratulations to our 5th-grade students. 🎓 Today, you conclude an important chapter at this school. You have grown so much, and we are incredibly proud of everything you have achieved here. Thank you for your smiles, your ideas, and everything you have contributed to this community. 💙💚💛

🏫 Hoy cerramos un año escolar lleno de aprendizajes, amistades, juegos y muchos momentos especiales. ☀️ Ahora llega el verano: tiempo para descansar, divertirse, compartir con sus familias y disfrutar toda la emoción del Mundial de fútbol que estará acompañando estas vacaciones. 🎉 Ojalá cada gol, cada partido y cada celebración les recuerde también la importancia del trabajo en equipo, el esfuerzo y nunca dejar de soñar.⚽

Y queremos dar una felicitación muy especial a nuestros estudiantes de 5to grado. 🎓Hoy ustedes cierran una etapa importante en esta escuela. We’ll be gathering on the second-to-last day of school to celebrate a successful and happy year.
Feel free to bring a small treat to share—such as cookies or mini-muffins—as we relax and enjoy each other's company.

On Thursday, June 11, from 11 a.m. to noon at the Main Library’s MLK Jr. Auditorium, sing along with the Lyric Chorus as they welcome the summer with a performance of favorite Broadway tunes. Plus, create your own zine in a hands-on workshop led by Heavy Manners Library on Wednesday, June 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Ocean Park Branch.

Parents: Know Before They Ride

SMPD is seeing an increase in juveniles riding electric motorcycles and high-powered e-bikes recklessly on public streets, sidewalks, and other public spaces. These vehicles are not toys. Many are capable of speeds that make them unsafe and unlawful for children to operate on public roadways.

When riders ignore traffic laws or operate recklessly, they put themselves, pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and officers at risk. In some cases, riders have failed to stop when officers attempt to contact them, sometimes while trying to create social media content, creating additional safety concerns for the rider, the public, and responding personnel.

Parents and guardians should also know that allowing a child to unlawfully operate an electric motorcycle or other motorized vehicle can have consequences. Depending on the circumstances, parents may be cited, the vehicle may be impounded, and criminal liability may be considered if a child is placed in danger or someone is injured.

Before buying or allowing your child to ride one of these vehicles, make sure you know:
• Whether it is legally classified as an e-bike, moped, motorcycle, or off-highway vehicle
• Where it can legally be ridden
• Whether a driver’s license, registration, helmet, or other requirements apply
• Whether your child is legally permitted to operate it

SMPD’s goal is to prevent serious injuries before they happen.

Ride legally. Ride safely. Parents, please know the rules before handing over the keys.
