It has now grown to a thriving campus with approximately 30,000 students and offerings in more than 80 fields of study. We have an impressive academic record. We are the leader among the state's 110 community colleges in transferring students to the University of California, University of Southern California and other four-year campuses. We also pride ourselves on preparing students for careers of the 21st century – in such fields as nursing, solar technology, new media, computer technology, early childhood education, business, graphic design and other occupations. Santa Monica College is one of the most affordable institutions of higher education in the world. Tuition is only $46 a unit for California residents. And we have an active Financial Aid office that will help you get the funds you need to pay for your college education. Set on a 38-acre main campus less than two miles from the beach and several nearby satellite campuses, Santa Monica College has everything today's student needs to succeed – computer labs, athletic facilities, performing and visual arts spaces, and active student clubs. Our state-of-the-art facilities have won numerous architectural and sustainability awards, as has our beautiful Quad with fountains, palm trees and benches. Our award-winning faculty works closely with students to ensure their success, and we have numerous student services to help students meet their goals. Our academic excellence and prime location in a vibrant urban area attract students from all over the world. Members of our community are invited to take advantage of a wealth of cultural and recreational offerings, including concerts, plays, art and photo shows, and lectures. The college has attracted world renowned speakers, including President Clinton. Our Continuing & Community Education program offers year round a broad range of classes – in such fields as computers, career enhancement, the arts, self development, and fitness. Our widely praised Emeritus College was founded in 1974 to serve people 55 and older by offering classes in downtown Santa Monica and conveniently located community facilities. From exploring different majors to finding a passion for communications, Edgar's journey from SMC to UC San Diego has been one of growth and self-discovery. 🎓💙✨
"I started at SMC over 10 years ago, unsure of what I wanted to study yet, but knowing that college was something I wanted to pursue. As a first-generation college student, SMC was a community college with a vast selection of classes to explore and support systems to guide me. The campus was big enough to have the full college experience but still manageable enough to learn how to navigate and ask questions without getting lost. My SMC story is not a straight line. It has been a lot of starting, adjusting, failing, and growing, but it was never in vain. What stands out most about my time at SMC is that I wasn't the kind of student I am now when I first started."
"SMC taught me to ask for help. Whether it was through my Adelante counselor, Italian tutoring, statistics tutoring, or office hours with my professors, I learned that support is a strength, not a weakness. Through that, I discovered how I could support the next generation by getting into education as a behavioral interventionist."
"Taking general education classes helped me discover interests I might not have found if I had rushed through school with just a degree in mind. My biggest turning point was taking Media 1 with Professor Aimee Chen. Her class helped me realize how much I enjoyed marketing, media, and communications because the assignments connected directly to real-world examples. Professor Chen connected me with people in the field, which gave me a clearer understanding of what a career in communications can look like."
"I want to give a shout-out to Professor Aimee Chen for being challenging, fostering creativity, and providing real-world experience. I also want to shout out Daniel Rocha and Dennis Funes from Adelante. They helped me establish a support system that enabled me to succeed in mathematics and academic planning. They all represent what has made SMC important to my growth: a community that helped me move forward."
