At first glance, this might just look like a little boy eating a sandwich.

But to us, it means so much more.

G is 2 1/2 on his way to 3 years old. When he first started at Selby, sitting at the table for a meal was a challenge. Over time, through patience, consistency, and a whole lot of love, he began coming to the table and joining his friends.

Until this week, every bite required an adult to hold the food for him. Every meal.

Yesterday, we sat behind him and encouraged him to hold the sandwich with us. Today, he picked it up himself. Not once. Not by accident. Again and again.

For the first time, G was choosing what he wanted to eat, picking it up, and taking bites independently.

His pride was written all over his face.

And then something beautiful happened.

We cheered.

His classmates immediately joined in. Every time he took another bite, his friends celebrated with him. At just 2 and 3 years old, they understood something powerful: their encouragement mattered.

This is inclusion.

This is what happens when children learn alongside children of all abilities. They learn to celebrate each other's victories. They learn empathy. They learn that success looks different for everyone.

Most people will never know how much work goes into a moment like this. The countless meals, the patient encouragement, the small steps that lead to a breakthrough.

But this is why what we do every day matters.

Because sometimes the biggest victories look like a little boy taking a bite of a sandwich while his friends cheer him on.

And that's the kind of magic that happens at Selby.

Retirement may be the official title, but anyone who knows Missy knows that her love for children and education doesn’t simply retire.

Today we celebrated a woman who has left her fingerprints on generations of children, families, and educators. Through decades of service, Missy has shared her wisdom, her passion for Montessori education, and her unwavering belief in the potential of every child. Her steady presence, kind heart, and dedication have helped shape Selby into the special place it is today.

We are so grateful for all she has given to our school community and for the countless lives she has touched along the way. Thank you, Missy, for the laughter, the lessons, the advocacy, and the love. You will always be a part of the Selby family. ❤️📚🌿
