Casa Dei Bambini – Part 3 ✨

Oh my goodness! What an absolutely incredible experience. I’m still buzzing from the whole thing.

Here you’ll see the Practical Life area, a bit of Geometry, Music, and Geography, along with some notable units on Greek mythology, evolution, and the queen bee 🐝 herself, Dr. Montessori.

There was a time when I worked with an incredible teacher named Erica Sanchez- Erica Sanchez , and she would create units on artists like Basquiat, Henry, Matisse, and Frida Kahlo—all in true Montessori fashion. It always blew my mind. The children would match three-part cards of their work, create their own renditions, and learn about who the artist was.

I had a flashback while looking at these units in Casa Dei Bambini. What an absolute dream.

Casa dei Bambini – Part 2 ✌️

OK, so after my expectations had already been exceeded by making it into the courtyard and peeking through the window of the original Casa dei Bambini like a total creep, one of the teachers came out and gave us five minutes to check out the classroom while the children were away.

I’m still reeling from the entire experience. It felt like I had stepped back in time.

The classroom was open and spacious. The materials were arranged in their designated areas, and everything felt purposeful. The materials looked loved, and the environment felt truly lived in. The children were happy, and my heart was full.

We may not speak the same language, but we do the same work, and that connection means everything.

You know, guys, I thought I would manage my expectations here. I had been told you couldn’t go into the school, and there was some conflicting information online about whether it was even still operating as a school. All in all, this experience far exceeded my expectations.

A little history on Casa dei Bambini: this was not just a school. It was a community where the residents of this very low-income district just outside the walls of Rome were given dignity, respect, and purpose. This was truly a mission that went far beyond educating children. It was a symbiotic relationship between families and children, and a deeper look at how society can thrive when people are given a sense of purpose and opportunity.

So when I came to Rome, I knew I had to see where it all began.

I was able to book this tour off the books with an incredibly knowledgeable and wonderful woman named Karin Slabaugh. I feel like I learned more in the five hours we spent together than from all the books I read during my training. She comes from the unique perspective of an American AMI-trained teacher who has lived in Italy for the last couple of decades. She has read every Dr. Montessori book available in Italian that has not yet been published in English.

I have so much footage of her talking, and I can’t wait to share it with all of you. This is just the tip of the iceberg, and what an iceberg it is.
