The College of Science and Engineering and the Physics Department congratulate Assistant Teaching Professor Robin Bjorkquist on being named a 2026 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics Laureate as part of the Fermilab team investigating the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, known as "muon g–2".

Often referred to as "the Oscars of science," the Breakthrough Prizes annually recognize major achievements in each of the areas of life sciences, mathematics and fundamental physics. This year’s Fundamental Physics prize honors decades of collaborative research conducted through experiments at CERN, Brookhaven National Laboratory and Fermilab, to which Bjorkquist contributed as a graduate student from 2011-2017.

The Mathematics Department held its fourth annual Integration Bee on May 14—it’s like a spelling bee, except it uses integrals. ➗🐝

Organized by Max Burger and Emery Crellin, this year's event featured 16 student participants.

Congratulations to Seattle University's American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Steel Bridge Team on an outstanding performance at the Pacific Northwest Regional Competition, held at the University of Alaska Anchorage this spring as part of the ASCE Student Symposium!

The team assembled its steel bridge in just 19 minutes with only four builders and achieved an impressive maximum deflection of just 0.2 inches during vertical load testing.

Their efforts earned:

1st Place: Structural Efficiency
1st Place: Stiffness
3rd Place: Cost Estimating

Back on campus, the team celebrated their success with a gathering in the quad, where they rebuilt the award-winning bridge and gave prospective members a chance to see the team in action.

Congratulations to captains Matthew Costello and Eric Lillo, team members Adenike Adejumobi, Chris Beven, Sowmya Shalmali Jagadeesh, Eric Godfrey, Blue Moo, Katie Zheng and Mitchell Rosema, and thank you to faculty advisor Katie Kuder and industry mentor Philip Yu for supporting the team throughout the season.

Seattle University College of Science and Engineering's student entrepreneurship team, BioLegacy, recently achieved national and regional recognition through outstanding performances in two highly competitive business plan competitions.

The team, consisting of Steven Hong (Mechanical Engineering), Bea Hoyme (Mechanical Engineering), and Michi Tawara (Biology), competed in the Rice University Business Plan Competition (RBPC) and the Washington State University Business Plan Competition. Widely regarded as the most competitive student business competition in the United States, RBPC received more than 550 applications in 2026, with only the top 7% of teams selected to compete in Houston, Texas, from April 9-11. Following their strong showing at RBPC, BioLegacy continued their momentum by earning 2nd place in Open League at the WSU Business Plan Competition in Pullman on April 30.

BioLegacy is a spinoff venture originating from research led by Dr. Shen Ren (Mechanical Engineering) in organ preservation and biomedical engineering. Since 2023, the team has competed in eight additional national and regional competitions, earning five Grand Prizes and three 2nd-place finishes.

These accomplishments highlight the strength of Seattle University’s interdisciplinary approach to innovation and entrepreneurship, empowering students to translate cutting-edge research into real-world impact.
