A stunning celestial alignment is occurring in the western sky just after sunset, featuring the Moon, Venus, and Jupiter. Because of their positions and the crescent shape of the Moon, this grouping forms a grinning “sky smile” often visible to the naked eye.
Observing the conjunction requires no special equipment, though a few tips will help you get the best view:
Where and When to Look
• Direction: Look toward the west-northwest horizon.
• Time: The best window is about 45 to 60 minutes after sunset, as the sky darkens.
• Naked-Eye Visibility: Venus will be the brightest object lower down, glowing brilliantly at magnitude \(-3.9\). Jupiter will shine higher in the sky at magnitude \(-1.9\).
The Night-by-Night Breakdown
• May 19: The Moon (about a 15% illuminated crescent) appears perfectly suspended right between Venus and Jupiter.
• May 20: The crescent Moon continues its eastward journey, climbing higher and moving just beyond Jupiter.
Observing & Photography Tips
• Earthshine: If you look closely at the dark side of the Moon, you might notice a faint glow. This is “earthshine”—sunlight reflecting off Earth and back onto the Moon.
• Binoculars: Use binoculars to get a clearer look and possibly spot some of Jupiter’s Galilean moons as tiny dots near the planet.
• Photography: This rare alignment makes for an incredible photo op. Place your smartphone or camera on a tripod and use a 3-to-5-second exposure to capture the trio alongside the background stars.
