Read an excerpt from Rabbi Weiner’s newest Substack article, “Pope Culture”:
“The Hebrew word for work is avodah. But this is a word that does much work itself. For it means more than merely labor. It also connotes formal elements of worship and the sacrificial rite. And perhaps most compellingly, it conveys a sense of service beyond self—either for God or on behalf of others and the community. And so, what AI could supplant is more than simply the purposeful empowerment of human labor. It threatens the most critical component of our humanity—one that links a dignified sense of self to a deep regard for the well being of others—covenantally enriched by the binding force of divine love.”
