Officially recognized by the IAS Aroid Cultivar Registry.

Philodendron ‘Kitina’ was originated by oh_my_plantae and named by Mr. Yanakorn Kongtan in honor of Prang Kitina, the founder of Oh My Plantae - ไม้นำเข้า, ไม้อนุบาล, ต้นไม้ฟอกอากาศ, อุปกรณ์สำหรับต้นไม้.

Happy World Rainforest Day.

The rainforest is where the plants we grow, collect, and admire often begin their story. Rainforests cover less than 7% of Earth’s land surface, yet they are home to nearly half of all terrestrial species.

Many of the aroids we admire evolved in these forests, from the dim understory to the highest reaches of the canopy. Their incredible diversity reminds us not only of nature’s ingenuity, but also of our responsibility to protect it.

The International Aroid Society is dedicated to advancing the study and appreciation of aroids through education, supporting scientific research, and contributing to conservation efforts that help safeguard these ecosystems and the plants that depend on them.

This World Rainforest Day, we celebrate the forests that inspire our passion and renew our commitment to understanding and protecting them.

A forest can be famous and still hold secrets.

The Sooretama Biological Reserve is one of the most important protected areas in Brazil and part of the largest remaining fragment of Tabuleiro Forest. Yet for Anthurium and other Araceae, we know surprisingly little.

Carolina Urman is working to change that.

Her research will document the Anthurium species of Sooretama, update decades old records, and perhaps even uncover species never recorded there before. Some discoveries happen in laboratories. Others happen when someone walks into the forest and asks, “What grows here?”

IAS is proud to support Carolina’s work through funds raised at the Tropical Plant Expo and Aroids After Dark. Help support work like hers through donating to the IAS or attending the Tropical Plant Expo. Aroid.org/expo

Officially recognized by the IAS Aroid Cultivar Registry.

Alocasia ‘Purpley’ was originated by William Rotolante of Silver Krome Gardens Inc. and named by his father Denis Rotolante. Derived from Alocasia ‘Amazonica’, this cultivar takes dramatic foliage to another level.

Dark leaves with bold contrasting veins. A purple so vivid and saturated it looks like it belongs on another planet. No filters. Just the plant. With its compact growth habit and striking coloration, ‘Purpley’ is a cultivar that deserves a closer look.

Now officially registered on the IAS Aroid Cultivar Registry.

Anthurium ‘Jack of Clubs’ was released in 2021 by William Rotolante of Silver Krome Gardens Inc.. The name comes from the playing card and once you see the leaves, the reference is obvious. Club shaped foliage. Cream-colored veins cut through the dark foliage for contrast.

Which playing-card-themed Anthurium is your favorite?

Some forests are famous. Others are quietly extraordinary.

Mt. Makiling holds layers of biodiversity shaped by elevation, soil, and climate. Within it grows aroids whose diversity has not been fully mapped.

Phil Sumabat is documenting these species and studying their genetic variation to understand how resilient they truly are. Conservation is not only about stopping destruction. It is about knowing what exists before it is lost.

The IAS is investing in that knowledge with the help of you. Your membership and Expo attendance fund real fieldwork, real data, and real conservation outcomes like Phil’s. Join the International Aroid Society today and make a difference at Aroid.org/join
