Today, we celebrate the Feast of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, the patron saint of youth and students whose life continues to inspire our Gonzaga community.

At just 23 years old, Aloysius Gonzaga dedicated his life to serving others, caring for those affected by a plague in Rome and living out a deep commitment to faith, education and compassion. His courage, humility and care for those most in need remain at the heart of the Jesuit values that guide Gonzaga University today.

As we honor our namesake, we reflect on his example of service and the call to use our gifts for the greater good.

Today, we recognize Juneteenth, a celebration of freedom and an opportunity to honor the resilience, achievements and contributions of Black Americans throughout history.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that more than 250,000 enslaved people were free. The day became known as Juneteenth.

As we commemorate this important moment in American history, we celebrate Black history, culture, leadership and community while taking time to reflect on the ongoing pursuit of justice, equity and belonging for all.

Today, and every day, we remain committed to learning from the past and building a future where every person can thrive and flourish.
