What a fun, musical way to prepare for summer! β˜€οΈπŸŽΆ

This morning, our school came together for a special summer-themed music event, led by our music therapist. Students enjoyed summer music favorites and explored a variety of musical instruments, making music together as a school community.

We were especially excited to introduce a variety of new instruments purchased through a generous grant from the The Guitar Center Music Foundation. Thank you for helping create meaningful, engaging musical experiences for our students!

What a wonderful day at Key Center School yesterday for our Field Day and Family Picnic!

While the oppressive heat forced us to move Field Day activities indoors, our students, families, and staff made the most of it with a fun-filled day in the gym. Families were invited to join their students for games, activities, and plenty of smiles, followed by a family picnic and PTA meeting. We extend our sincere gratitude to Fairfax County 250th Commemoration and the Key Center PTA for generously sponsoring this special event and helping make the day such a success. In addition to the fun and socializing, we also conducted important PTA business, including the approval of our PTA Executive Board and proposed budget for the upcoming school year.

We were especially honored to welcome the Tinker/Enos family, who shared a heartfelt memorial to their son, Matt, a Key Center alumnus. Their generous donation to the PTA in Matt’s memory is deeply appreciated and will help support future opportunities for our students.

Thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, and helped make the day memorable. A great time was had by all, and we are grateful for the strong community that makes Key Center such a special place!

Our Transition classes wrapped up their 4-week Around the World experience today! This final week focused on Ghana. Throughout the week, students explored Ghanaian culture through hands-on learning and engaging activities. To celebrate the end of the unit, students participated in a variety of group activities that brought their learning to life.

As a sensory activity, students created colorful Kente cloth art using dyed rice, made their own djembe drum crafts, and even prepared their own tasty jollof rice dish to enjoy. This was such a creative and fun learning experience for the students! πŸŒπŸš€

A special thank you to the FCPSGet2Green program for providing the funding to purchase plants and garden supplies. We are also thankful to the Boy Scout Troop #859 for their hard work creating pathways and relocating our raised garden beds. A huge thank you goes to parent volunteer Beth Clark for generously donating plants and spending her time helping us get everything planted.

This beautiful new outdoor learning space will give our students opportunities to explore nature, learn about pollinators, sustainability, and caring for our environment. It is already bringing so much joy to our school community and creating meaningful learning experiences for our students.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this project possible! πŸŒΌπŸπŸ¦‹

Today was butterfly release day at school! Over the past week, our classes have been learning about the butterfly life cycle by caring for caterpillars, watching them form chrysalises, and celebrating as they emerged as beautiful butterflies.

Today, our students helped set them free to begin their important work as pollinators supporting our earth. It was an amazing experience full of learning and excitement as we watched the butterflies take flight. πŸ¦‹πŸš€πŸŒ

We had a great week celebrating Earth-friendly activities at Key Center School, and we ended on a high note today for Arbor Day! We were happy to welcome Susan Farmer from the Fairfax Tree Commission. She brought saplings and engaging sensory materials to help our students learn about the importance of trees.

Students especially loved watering the White Oak saplings and taking a moment to β€œthank” the trees for helping our Earth. It was a meaningful, hands-on way to connect with nature. We are so proud of our students for learning ways to care for our planet this week! 🌱
