Last week at Curtain Call Stamford Kweskin Theatre, we proudly presented our inaugural Artist-in-Residence, Ashley Yoon, in her Fairfield County recital debut. Joined by pianist Min Joo Yi, Ashley performed works by Mozart, Schumann, and Sarasate.

The recital also showcased the talent of our INTEMPO Music School community. Nate C. (Li Family Scholar) and Alexis Zingale - Pianist opened the concert with Rachmaninoff’s Sonata for Viola and Piano, while Ashley was joined by Sam S. (Om Arora Memorial Scholar), Valeria G. (MDPS Woofenpoof Scholar), and teaching artist Darwin Shen for a thrilling performance of Bach’s Double Violin Concerto.

Following the recital, guests gathered at Bar Rosso to celebrate Ashley and the launch of INTEMPO’s Artist-in-Residence program.

La semana pasada, en el Teatro Kweskin de Curtain Call, presentamos con orgullo a nuestra primera Artista Residente, Ashley Yoon, en su recital debut en el condado de Fairfield. Acompañada por la pianista Min Joo Yi, Ashley interpretó obras de Mozart, Schumann y Sarasate.

El recital también destacó el talento de nuestra comunidad de la Escuela de Música de INTEMPO. Nate C. (Becario de la Familia Li), junto a la pianista Alexis Zingale, abrió el concierto con la Sonata para Viola y Piano de Rachmaninoff. Más tarde, Ashley compartió el escenario con Sam S. (Becario Conmemorativo Om Arora), Valeria G. (Becaria MDPS Woofenpoof) y el artista docente Darwin Shen para una emocionante interpretación del Concierto para Dos Violines de Bach.

Después del recital, los invitados se reunieron en Bar Rosso para celebrar a Ashley y el lanzamiento oficial del programa de Artistas en Residencia de INTEMPO.

: “My parents are from Lima, Peru, and growing up, our home was always filled with Peruvian music, especially huayno and cumbia. When I was about eight years old, I joined INTEMPO alongside my siblings, where I had the opportunity to explore that music more deeply, primarily through the charango. At the same time, I was also studying classical music on the violin and guitar. One piece that became a staple of our concerts was El Cóndor Pasa.

"The first time I played it, I realized how meaningful the piece was to my family. It's a song my parents have known for most of their lives, and now their children were performing it. There was something special about connecting with my family's culture through music. My parents left Peru and built a new life here, and playing a traditional folk song from their homeland helped me feel connected to that part of my heritage.

“When it came time to audition for Berklee College of Music on the guitar, I decided to perform another Peruvian folk piece, Adiós Pueblo de Ayacucho, using the arrangement by Riber Oré. It's a particularly challenging arrangement, and I was honored to be accepted after performing it.

“I'm currently a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and will be entering my senior year this fall. I'm majoring in Electronic Arts and Music with a minor in Graphic Design. Looking ahead, I would be excited to build a career in music production or work as an audio engineer in a studio environment.

“One piece of advice I would give my younger self, and any young musician, is to know that you won't be 100% better the next day. But having a goal and working toward it little by little is really the only way you can achieve something.”

: “Mis padres son de Lima, Perú, y mientras crecía, nuestro hogar siempre estuvo lleno de música peruana, especialmente huayno y cumbia. Cuando tenía alrededor de ocho años, me uní a INTEMPO junto con mis hermanos, donde tuve la oportunidad de explorar esa música con mayor profundidad, principalmente a través del charango. Al mismo tiempo, también estudiaba música clásica en el violín y la guitarra. Una de las piezas que se convirtió en un elemento esencial de nuestros conciertos fue El Cóndor Pasa.

“La primera vez que la interpreté, me di cuenta de lo significativa que era la pieza para mi familia. Es una canción que mis padres han conocido durante la mayor parte de sus vidas, y ahora eran sus hijos quienes la estaban interpretando. Había algo especial en conectar con la cultura de mi familia a través de la música. Mis padres dejaron Perú y construyeron una nueva vida aquí, y tocar una canción folclórica tradicional de su tierra natal me ayudó a sentirme conectada con esa parte de mi herencia cultural.

“Cuando llegó el momento de audicionar para el Berklee College of Music con la guitarra, decidí interpretar otra pieza folclórica peruana, Adiós Pueblo de Ayacucho, utilizando el arreglo de Riber Oré. Es un arreglo particularmente desafiante, y me sentí honrada de ser aceptada después de interpretarlo.

“Actualmente soy estudiante en el Instituto Politécnico Rensselaer y este otoño comenzaré mi último año de carrera. Estoy estudiando Artes Electrónicas y Música, con una especialización secundaria en Diseño Gráfico. De cara al futuro, me entusiasmaría desarrollar una carrera en la producción musical o trabajar como ingeniera de audio en un entorno de estudio.

“Un consejo que le daría a mí misma cuando era más joven, y a cualquier músico joven, es que sepa que no va a ser 100 % mejor al día siguiente. Pero tener una meta y trabajar hacia ella poco a poco es realmente la única manera de lograr algo.”

Please join us in welcoming our 2026 summer interns, Morgan and Arav!

Morgan Taylor and Arav Amin are interns supported by Princeton University RISE (Recognizing Inequities and Standing for Equality) via the Pace Center for Civic Engagement, Princeton University. Morgan, a music major, and Arav, a violinist from Norwalk, will be leading our Musical Theater and Strings programs from June 22 through July 31.

This week, they helped out with our Artist-in-Residence Winner's Recital, and have just completed their first week with us. We're excited to have them on our team this summer and can't wait for our students and community to get to know them.

Un enorme agradecimiento a la Sinfónica Juvenil de Norwalk por apoyar el programa del ensamble de cuerdas.

: “Growing up, playing music was a way for me to express myself. Not only that, but playing an instrument comes with discipline and constant practice. It taught me that if I want to do something well, I have to put in the time and effort. Discipline has helped me in school, especially when it came to projects and reports.

“The 2025 Cultural Crossover Concert is my favorite concert. There was a traditional Ecuadorian song called Juyayay, where a friend and I dressed in folkloric attire to represent the ‘Diablo Humas’ and danced across the aisles. Through these concerts, I got to learn more about the cultures of different Latin American countries. Some songs tell stories and have a deeper meaning behind them, which is always fascinating to learn about. When we play these pieces, we get a sense of the heritage and emotions behind the songs.”

: “Mientras crecía, tocar música era una forma de expresarme. No solo eso, sino que tocar un instrumento requiere disciplina y práctica constante. Me enseñó que, si quiero hacer algo bien, tengo que dedicarle tiempo y esfuerzo. La disciplina me ha ayudado en la escuela, especialmente cuando se trataba de proyectos e informes.

“El Concierto Cruzando Culturas 2025 es mi concierto favorito. Hubo una canción tradicional ecuatoriana llamada Juyayay, en la que un amigo y yo nos vestimos con atuendos folclóricos para representar a los ‘Diablos Humas’ y bailamos por los pasillos. A través de estos conciertos, pude aprender más sobre las culturas de diferentes países latinoamericanos. Algunas canciones cuentan historias y tienen un significado más profundo, lo cual siempre es fascinante descubrir. Cuando interpretamos estas piezas, logramos sentir la herencia cultural y las emociones que hay detrás de las canciones.”

¡Le deseamos a Jamie mucho éxito en Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, donde estudiará Sonografía Médica Diagnóstica!

Last month, 16 students from INTEMPO attended a New York Philharmonic performance led by incoming Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, then met him backstage after the concert!

Alpert Family Scholar Emma, presented the maestro with a bouquet of ribbon roses that she had crafted herself, inspired by Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird, which was on the evening’s program.

Emma shared, “Making a bouquet for Gustavo Dudamel was an honor, and being able to present it to him myself was a great experience. Seeing him conduct was even more inspiring. The way he conducted such beautiful pieces, sometimes without even looking at the score, was pure talent.”

A special thank you to Building One Community Executive Director Marissa Munoz and INTEMPO supporters Liz Ball and Bill Taufic for supporting the students throughout the day.

And congratulations to INTEMPO’s new lead choral teaching artist, Shabnam Abedi, for making her debut with the New York Philharmonic Chorus that same evening!

¡El mes pasado, 16 estudiantes de INTEMPO asistieron a una presentación de la Filarmónica de Nueva York dirigida por el futuro Director Musical y Artístico, Gustavo Dudamel, y luego tuvieron la oportunidad de conocerlo entre bastidores después del concierto!

Emma, becaria de la Familia Alpert, le obsequió al maestro un ramo de rosas de cinta elaborado por ella misma, inspirado en El pájaro de fuego de Igor Stravinsky, una de las obras incluidas en el programa de la noche.

Emma compartió, “Hacer un ramo para Gustavo Dudamel fue un honor, y poder entregárselo personalmente fue una gran experiencia. Verlo dirigir fue aún más inspirador. La manera en que dirigía piezas tan hermosas, a veces sin siquiera mirar la partitura, era puro talento.”

Un agradecimiento especial a Marissa Muñoz, directora ejecutiva de Building One Community, y a los colaboradores de INTEMPO Liz Ball y Bill Taufic por apoyar a los estudiantes durante toda el día.

Y felicitaciones a la nueva artista docente principal de coro de INTEMPO, Shabnam Abedi, por su debut con el Coro de la Filarmónica de Nueva York esa misma noche!

INTEMPO Education Manager Daniel Kumapayi, Youth Navigator Soraya Hernandez, Alpert Family Scholar Emma, and Heckel Family Scholar Jasmine recently attended the El Sistema USA Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) at Kinhaven Music School in Vermont.

This year-long initiative brings together program leaders and young musicians from INTEMPO and four partner organizations as co-learners to develop leadership skills and create pathways to college, careers in music, and beyond.

Jasmine shared:

"Working alongside such passionate youth leaders was incredibly inspiring. Beyond the leadership lessons, I am so grateful for the friendships and memories we made, whether through music-making, conversations, and even sharing laughs in the dining hall. I look forward to continuing to collaborate with this amazing group, and I can’t wait to see the impact we make in our music programs and communities."

El director de educación de INTEMPO, Daniel Kumapayi; la navegadora juvenil, Soraya Hernandez; la becaria de la familia Alpert, Emma; y la becaria de la familia Heckel, Jasmine, asistieron recientemente al Instituto de Liderazgo Juvenil de El Sistema USA en la Escuela de Música Kinhaven en Vermont.

Esta iniciativa de un año reúne a líderes de programas y jóvenes músicos de INTEMPO y cuatro organizaciones asociadas como coaprendices para desarrollar habilidades de liderazgo y crear caminos hacia la universidad, carreras en la música y en otros campos profesionales.

Jasmine compartió:

"Trabajar junto a jóvenes líderes tan apasionados fue increíblemente inspirador. Más allá de las lecciones de liderazgo, estoy muy agradecida por las amistades y los recuerdos que compartimos a través de la música, las conversaciones e incluso las risas en el comedor. Me entusiasma seguir colaborando con este increíble grupo y estoy emocionada por ver el impacto que lograremos en nuestros programas de música y en nuestras comunidades."
