Happy International Day of Play!
Research shows that play isn't just fun. It's how kids build problem-solving skills, creativity, resilience, and confidence. And one of the best places for that kind of learning? A garden.
Here are some ways kids can play and learn through plants this summer:
π± Plant a seed race: Plant the same seed in different conditions (sun vs. shade, water vs. less water) and let kids predict which one will grow fastest.
πͺ΄ Build a mini greenhouse: Grab a clear plastic container, some soil, and a few seeds. Kids design, build, and observe.
π¨ Press flowers and leaves: Collect plants, press them between books, and use them for art projects. Botany meets creativity.
π Go on a bug hunt: Flip leaves, check the soil, look at what's living around the plants. Every garden is an ecosystem waiting to be explored.
Play can be a seed, some dirt, and a kid who's curious enough to ask, "What happens if...?" Happy playing!

What a day! Yesterday the Farm-Ed team had the privilege of presenting and exhibiting at the 3rd Annual HCPS STEM Leadership Mini Conference, and we're still buzzing from the energy in those rooms. We got to do what we love most: talk about ag-based inquiry with educators.
We got to see familiar faces of our existing program teachers AND meet new educators who are excited to bring Farm-Ed into their classrooms next. And as a bonus, we got to work alongside our fantastic partners University of South Florida and Inventhers! Thank you to Hillsborough County Public Schools for putting together such a meaningful event for STEM leaders!
Here's to more classrooms, more curiosity, and more ag-based inquiry ahead.

Who says you need a science lab to teach science? Sometimes all you need is a corner of the library!
This Grow Chamber sits in a shared school space where every student passes through. That means every student gets to see real plants growing, ask questions about the science behind it, and develop curiosity that comes with watching food come to life. Accessible to every grade, every class, every student in the building, Farm-Ed helps bring science literacy to life!

Friday flex: When your whole class shows up with a harvest they grew themselves!
These students used Farm-Ed's Grow Chamber to grow green and red leaf lettuce hydroponically. They tracked temperature, nutrients, pH, and light data throughout the grow cycle, and today they got to hold the results in their hands.
This is the kind of Friday we love to see!

Harvest day is about more than just picking lettuce:
π Units of Measure - Students weigh their yield in grams and ounces, measure leaf span in centimeters, and calculate total output per grow cycle.
π Supply Chain - Students trace the journey from seed supplier to classroom chamber to table and compare it to the traditional farm-to-store path.
π° Cost-Benefit Analysis - Students factor in energy, water, nutrients, and time, then compare it to the price of lettuce at the grocery store.
One harvest. Three real-world lessons.

Every great thing starts with strong roots!
Students examine root development, compare growth patterns, and ask questions like: Why are these roots longer? What conditions made this plant thrive?
No textbook can replace holding a living root system in your hands and understanding exactly what made it grow.
