Holy moly. First non-underwater beach cleanup I've participated in for awhile and pulled nearly 30 lbs of trash (mostly beer bottles) out of the mangroves this afternoon.

Us: Interesting you ask. Sea stars can reproduce both sexually and asexually. In sexual reproduction, males and females release s***m and eggs into the water to be fertilized.

The fertilized embryos become zooplankton and then develop into sea star larvae that settle on the ocean floor and grow into the sea stars we all know and love!

Alternatively, asexual reproduction is by fragmentation. A part of a sea star arm and part of the central disk detaches from the "parent" and develops into an independent individual sea star.

Both of these processes occur at the Aquarium, so yes, you could say we have seen A Star is Born - many times in fact!
