Carter French '22 is scaling the highest of heights on a most improbable journey as a throwback to a different era of college athletics.
An academics-first, med school-bound student-athlete at a powerhouse program, French, known as "Doctor" around North Carolina baseball, has helped the Tar Heels reach the College World Series and put them in prime position for a berth in the championship.
The walk-on, 4-year player for UNC, who was Jesuit's Class of 2022 co-Salutatorian, scored the winning run in the clinching Super Regional game last week. Then on Sunday at the CWS in Omaha, Neb., he was 2-for-3 as UNC improved to 2-0 in the CWS to move within a win of a berth in the championship.
French, who won football (2021) and baseball (2022) State titles at Jesuit, is one of seven Jesuit baseball alums to participate in the College World Series since 2022, joining:
2022 – P Josh Mallitz '20 - Ole Miss (National Champions)
2023 – C Bennett Lee '20 – Wake Forest
2023 – P Camden Minacci '20 – Wake Forest
2024 – IF Bradke Lohry '21 – Tennessee (National Champions)
2024 – P John Abraham '23 – Florida State
2024 – P Jamie Arnold '22 – Florida State
