When Christopher Carrino Jr. ’26 arrived at Rose Hill, he knew that following a legendary name would take immense hard work.

Growing up as the son of newly minted Hall of Fame broadcaster Chris Carrino ’92, Christopher’s goal was always to find his own distinct voice. Over the last four years, he did exactly that by treating WFUV Sports not just as a campus radio station, but as a professional launchpad.

While the seats in Keating Hall haven't changed much since his father's time on campus, the scope of hands-on opportunities for our students has completely transformed. Christopher Jr. is graduating not just with a degree, but with the real-world portfolio required to shape the future of sports media, including live reporting from Radio Row at Super Bowl LX in California, covering professional media pools at Yankee Stadium and MSG, and more.

As the New York Knicks return home to Madison Square Garden to tip off Game 3 of the NBA Finals tonight, the eyes of the basketball world are on NYC. But for the Fordham community, the sounds of this historic series are deeply personal.

The two most prominent voices anchoring the Knicks' championship run on television and inside the arena are both Fordham alumni who honed their craft right here at WFUV Sports.
While Mike Breen ’83 leads the national television broadcast for ABC and ESPN, Mike Walczewski ’77 is commanding the floor as the longtime public address announcer inside the Garden. Long before taking over the biggest sports media market in the world, both broadcasters were learning the ropes in the historic Rose Hill Gym.

As we cheer on the city this week, dive back into the stories behind the voices of the game:

Caffeinated popcorn? ☕️🍿

When first-year Gabelli School of Business student John Russak grew tired of spending $8 at Starbucks between classes, he decided to invent a zero-sugar energy snack.

Thanks to a transformative $1 million endowment from Fordham alumnus, investor, and philanthropist Mario Gabelli ‘65, the Fordham Foundry’s newly launched Early-Stage Venture Program is backing his idea. John's startup, Wide Eye, just secured a massive $30,000 inaugural investment from the fund, proving that game-changing business ideas can come from your very first year on campus.

This new fund represents a major evolution in how we back innovation on campus, providing roughly $60,000 annually to help student-run startups and Bronx-based ventures scale from raw ideas into viable businesses.
