The PRC's new Free Trade Zone in Inner Mongolia signals a pivot away from maritime trade routes toward deeper Eurasian economic integration through land-based trade via the Belt and Road Initiative. The plan seeks to develop China's hinterland, advance border security and ethnic governance objectives, and strengthen economic resilience by drawing Mongolia and Russia more closely into the PRC's economic orbit. China's new Ethnic Unity and Progress Law is raising alarms internationally. The legislation codifies Chinese leader Xi Jinping's push to forge a singular national identity, and pressures ethnic minorities to subjugate their culture and language to a Party-approved notion of "Chineseness." Like other provincial and national regulations enacted since 2010, the law accelerates the erasure of minority languages from public life. Muslim and Buddhist communities are already being told to incorporate it into their religious practices. The United Nations has warned it may violate 12 international human rights agreements China has ratified, with no response yet from Beijing. When it takes effect in July, minority repression could intensify dramatically. Read all of Jamestown’s coverage through the links below. 🔗🇨🇳

Private military networks are reshaping modern conflict. From a Bosnian Serb Wagner recruiter funneling fighters into Ukraine under fake construction contracts, to foreign PMCs flooding eastern DRC as Kinshasa struggles against M23 rebels, the privatization of war is accelerating globally. Short-term military gains, long-term instability. Read Jamestown’s coverage through the links below 🔗💵

Armenia hosted nearly 40 European leaders last week, the largest international summit in the country's history. The EU signed a new connectivity partnership with Yerevan, and France formalized a bilateral strategic agreement alongside it. Putin responded by offering what he called a "civilized divorce" if Armenians voted for EU integration. Pashinyan rejected the premise — Armenia isn't holding a referendum, and his government's goal is to act in Armenia's national interest, not against Russia's. Elections are on June 7 & the results will define how Armenia manages both relationships going forward. Find the full coverage through the links below 🔗🇦🇲 🇪🇺 🇷🇺

China's pressure campaign against Japan goes beyond Taiwan. Beijing is using post-WWII legal arguments to challenge Japan's military rise, but Japan isn't backing down. The LDP won big, and defense ties with the US, Philippines & France are growing. Supply chains have diversified, while authoritarian pressure is accelerating Japan's resolve, not stopping it.

Russia has been severely cracking down on Internet access for its population over the past few months. This is a continuation of a trend of information control that Russia has been using for years. Russia has long been banning hundreds of sites, including independent media, human rights groups, and even major global platforms, and trying to create a sovereign internet to isolate its domestic internet from global networks, all under the pretext of national security. The Kremlin’s goal with internet restrictions is to essentially control what the Russian people see, say, and believe. Read the full strategic snapshot through the link below 🔗 🇷🇺
