Before they became international ambassadors of jazz-funk, they were Howard students honing their craft on campus under the guidance of legendary musician and educator Donald Byrd.

More than 50 years later, The Blackbyrds continue to carry that legacy around the world, proving that excellence cultivated at Howard can resonate across generations.

During Black Music Month, we celebrate the enduring impact of The Blackbyrds and the Howard University roots that helped launch one of music's most influential bands.

Freedom delayed, but never denied.

This Juneteenth, we honor the resilience, courage, and determination of those who helped move our nation closer to its ideals of liberty and justice for all.

For Howard students, Juneteenth is more than a historical milestone. It is a reminder that education, advocacy, and achievement are powerful expressions of freedom.

Today, we reflect on the past, celebrate progress, and recommit ourselves to building a more equitable future.

Today, on World Sickle Cell Day, we honor the strength, resilience, and lived experiences of individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease.

For more than 50 years, Howard University has been a leader in sickle cell research, treatment, advocacy, and patient care through our Center for Sickle Cell Disease. As we continue advancing scientific discovery and expanding access to quality care, we remain committed to improving outcomes for communities disproportionately impacted by this disease.

Together, we recognize how far we've come and recommit ourselves to a future where every person living with sickle cell disease can live longer, stronger, and healthier lives.

Howard University remembers a true Bison legend, Linda Spencer (B.S. ’75, M.Ed. ’81), who passed away on June 8.

As a pioneer on Howard’s first women’s basketball team and the architect of the university's volleyball program, Coach Spencer spent decades breaking barriers. With 300 career victories and five MEAC titles, she retired as the winningest coach in Howard Athletics history—but her greatest legacy lives on in the generations of student-athletes she mentored and inspired.
