BJC defends and extends religious liberty for ALL people. Visit us at BJConline.org and follow us on Twitter and Instagram @BJContheHill

BJC defends religious freedom for all people and protects the separation of church and state in the historic Baptist tradition, working through education, litigation and legislation. We advocate a “golden rule” of religious liberty: Do not ask government to promote your religion if you don’t want government to promote somebody else’s religion; and do not permit government to hinder somebody else’s religion if you don’t want government to hinder your own religion.

In an attempt to squash legitimate concerns about the recent "Rededicate 250" event, we're seeing some cheap lines that betray what our country is really about.

On the latest Respecting Religion , Amanda and Holly talk more about the event and how it's another example of harmful "Christian nation" rhetoric that is having real-world consequences, especially in creating fear, anger, and distrust toward people of other religious beliefs.

We see Christian nationalism in celebrations that are supposed to be about America’s 250th birthday.

We see new court decisions on Ten Commandments mandates.

We see immigration enforcement near houses of worship.

We see our government targeting one religious belief system for disfavor.

What can we do? How should we respond?

Amanda and Holly are back May 21 for new conversations on these topics and more.

Yesterday, thousands gathered on the National Mall for an event organized by the White House to "rededicate" America as one nation under God. Government officials participated. Choirs from Liberty University and Hillsdale College performed. And the crowd was asked to solemnly commit this country to a specific vision of Christianity.

BJC Executive Director Amanda Tyler wrote about why this is a problem — not just for non-Christians, but for everyone. When government claims the mantle of God, it makes disagreement tantamount to blasphemy. That is not religious freedom. That is its opposite.
