This week’s Loan Word Wednesday is extra sweet.

The word sugar traveled into English from the Arabic word sukkar, after passing through several languages over centuries of trade and cultural exchange. 🍭

English is full of “borrowed” words, and every one tells a story about how people, ideas, food, and traditions moved across the world.

Can you think of another everyday word English borrowed from another language? 👇

Loan Word Wednesday 🌍✨

Did you know the word happy has roots in Old Norse?
English created happy from the Old Norse word happ, meaning “good luck” or “fortune.” 🍀

Which honestly makes sense… because a little good luck would make anyone feel pretty happy. 😄

Language travels in fascinating ways — and English is full of words borrowed, adapted, and remixed from cultures around the world.

🌍🍌 Loan Word Wednesday is back!

Today’s traveling word: banana
The word banana came into English fully intact from the Wolof language, native to Senegal, Mauritania, and Gambia. Later, Portuguese traders “borrowed” the word before eventually passing it along into English.

So yes, your smoothie has a whole linguistic travel history 😄

Language is constantly borrowing, blending, and evolving across cultures and centuries, and loan words are one of the coolest examples of that.

Now it’s your turn 👇What’s a word you were surprised to learn came from another language?

Bonus challenge: Can your students guess where “banana” came from without Googling? 🍌🌍
