Juneteenth, observed on June 19, marks the long-awaited day in 1865 when the news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Today, Juneteenth is recognized as a federal holiday commemorating the end of the atrociousness of slavery in the United States and serves as an opportunity to reflect on this significant moment in American history and its lasting impact on the nation.
