HLSCC Extends Deadline for 81 Fully Funded Let's Build VI Scholarships

Virgin Islanders now have more time to apply for fully funded scholarships in hospitality, marine services and construction trades after the application deadline for the Let's Build VI National Scholarship Programme was extended to June 30, 2026.

The H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC), in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, announced the extension this week, saying the additional time will allow more residents across the Territory to take advantage of the opportunities being offered.

Let's Build VI is a national workforce development initiative designed to equip Virgin Islanders with the skills, qualifications and practical experience needed to pursue careers in three key sectors of the economy: hospitality, marine services and construction trades.

The programme's first phase offers 81 fully funded scholarships, with nine scholarships allocated to each district and distributed equally among the three training pathways.

HLSCC President Dr. Richard Georges described the programme as a significant investment in the Territory's future workforce.

"Let's Build VI is a very special initiative," Dr. Georges said. "It is meant to equip Virgin Islanders to take up their rightful place in the sectors that drive our local economy—specifically the hospitality sector, the construction industry, and the marine sector. Extending the application deadline allows us to reach more people across the Territory and ensure that no one misses the opportunity to participate."

Registrar Janice Dawson said the College and Ministry will use the extension period to increase awareness of the programme through district-level outreach.

"We recognize that access is not only about funding but also about information and support," Dawson said. "As part of this extension, efforts will be made to engage communities at the district level to ensure prospective applicants understand the programme and how to apply."

The initiative builds on the success of the Let's Teach VI programme, launched two years ago to increase Virgin Islander participation in the education sector.

According to Dr. Georges, Let's Build VI is intended to address workforce gaps while strengthening local capacity in industries that are critical to the Territory's economic growth.

Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, Honourable Sharie de Castro, said the programme is designed to ensure Virgin Islanders are positioned to take advantage of opportunities within the hospitality, marine and construction sectors.

"For too long, opportunities in hospitality, marine, and construction have too often been filled from outside the Territory," she said. "That must change. Let's Build VI is about dignity, ownership, and leadership. It ensures that when development happens in the Virgin Islands, our people are not watching it—we are leading it."

The Hospitality Pathway offers training through the internationally recognized Les Roches Maître D' Certificate Programme. The Marine Pathway provides access to HLSCC's Marine Professional Training Level 1 Programme, while the Construction Trades Pathway begins with the NCCER Core Curriculum before advancing participants into specializations such as electrical work, carpentry and plumbing.

The programme is open to BVIslanders and Belongers aged 17 and older who possess a high school diploma or GED certificate or can demonstrate basic literacy and numeracy skills. Unemployed and underemployed individuals are encouraged to apply.

Applications will be accepted until June 30, with interviews expected to begin shortly after the application period closes.
