The International Office, Student Service, and Confucius Institute held a Parent and Student Meeting on Monday 15th June 2026 in preparation of the students for their annual trip to China through the Chinese Bridge Programme 2026. 12 students and 1 staff were selected to travel to China for this year's Chinese Bridge Programme. Samoa joined this programme in 2025, this is the second delegation who have represented Samoa in China.

The exchange of young students from the NUS to China not only enhances the language proficiency and cultural perspective of Samoan Chinese learners, but also injects new vitality into deepening educational and cultural exchanges between China and Samoa, and promoting mutual understanding and matchmaking among the younger generation. In collaboration of the National University of Samoa, Ministry of Education of China through Liaocheng University and the Embassy of the Republic People of China in Samoa, this made annual trip was made possible for our students to explore, learn and connect through the study of Chinese Language.

๐Ÿค Strengthening Research and Cultural Heritage Partnerships

๐ŸชพThe National University of Samoa (NUS), through its Centre for Samoan Studies (CSS), celebrates the signing of a Cooperation Agreement with the German Archaeological Institute (DAI), representing the Federal Republic of Germany.

๐ŸคThis partnership will support the joint research project, "Historical Settlement Dynamics in Samoa in a West Polynesian Context โ€“ Archaeology and Intertextual Research," bringing together the expertise of both institutions in archaeological research, cultural heritage management, and capacity building in tertiary education.

๐Ÿ“The agreement marks an important step in advancing collaborative research, preserving Samoa's rich cultural heritage, and creating new opportunities for academic exchange and knowledge sharing.

๐Ÿ™ŒNUS looks forward to a productive partnership that will contribute to a deeper understanding of Samoa's history and its place within the wider Pacific region.

The National University of Samoa congratulates Dr Kirifi N. Paoa on this historic achievement.

Your dedication to clinical excellence and research has set a new benchmark for future medical graduates.

We also acknowledge and congratulate your supervisors for their guidance and support. Wishing you continued success as you contribute to improving health outcomes in Samoa and the Pacific.

NUS School of Medicine - SOM

๐ŸŽ‰ History Made: First Medical Student Publication ๐ŸŽ‰

The School of Medicine is proud to celebrate a historic achievement by Dr Kirifi N. Paoa, a recent MBBS graduate of the school and now an intern doctor at Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital (TTMH).

Dr Paoa has become the first medical student in the history of the School of Medicine to successfully publish his final-year clinical audit and research project in a peer-reviewed international journal, Pacific Health Dialog.

This achievement marks an important milestone for our medical programme and reflects the School's commitment to developing a new generation of hybrid doctorsโ€”clinicians who not only provide patient care but also contribute to scientific research that strengthens health systems and improves health outcomes in Samoa and the Pacific region.

This success is only the beginning. Two additional manuscripts from the same graduating cohort are currently in the publication pipeline, while six more student research projects are preparing for Ministry of Health Health Research Committee presentation, review and publication approval.

These achievements demonstrate the growing culture of research, innovation, and evidence-based practice within the School of Medicine and highlight the potential of our students to contribute meaningfully to both clinical care and scientific discovery.

Congratulations to Dr Kirifi Paoa, his supervisors, on this historic accomplishment.

๐Ÿ“– Published Research Summary

The study examined adherence to secondary benzathine penicillin prophylaxis among Samoan children with acute rheumatic fever before and after Samoa's first COVID-19 outbreak. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research found that adherence declined following COVID-19-related service disruptions and became increasingly unequal, with vulnerable children experiencing the greatest challenges in maintaining treatment. The findings highlight the importance of continuity-focused and equity-oriented approaches to chronic disease management during public health emergencies.
