Technology is transforming how we tackle the literacy gap across sub‑Saharan Africa, opening new possibilities to reach children who have been left behind. Since 2014, Sun Books has delivered digital learning to classrooms with no internet and no electricity, powered entirely by solar.
Last week, our Senior Manager for Sub‑Saharan Africa, Naomi Nwagboso, attended the eLearning Africa Conference in Ghana to explore the latest advances in AI and education technology. These innovations are critical as we work to support the 88% of primary‑age children who struggle to read or write a simple sentence.
Together, we’re pushing for a future where every child can learn to read no matter where they live.

AI is changing how people engage with written content, but reading comprehension remains a core foundation of learning.
As more learners use AI to summarize, explain, and interpret text, a key question emerges: how do we ensure that deep reading and true understanding are not lost in the process?
AI can support literacy when used intentionally, but it should strengthen thinking, not replace it.
💬 How do you think AI is shaping the way we read today?

One thing I love about the World Literacy Foundation's Youth Ambassador Program is the diversity of people involved. Young people from all different backgrounds, experiences and cultures, coming together because they genuinely care about literacy and education in their own communities and across the world. The passion each individual brings is inspiring.
Every number in this post represents a person who cares and is ready to begin a 3-month program built to make real change.

On International Children’s Day, we acknowledge that reading starts at home. Parents build the foundations through everyday talk, stories and play, helping children develop strong language and early literacy skills. With warmth, encouragement and shared moments, families become their child’s first and most powerful teacher.
